SOUTH FORK 2A ROUNDUP: Maiden pounds N-C in first baseball game on home field this season

Playing on its field for the first time this season, Maiden High protected its one-game lead in South Fork 2A baseball on Friday night by beating Newton-Conover 11-0 in five innings.

Bain Sipes’ three-run home run invoked the 10-run mercy rule as the Blue Devils (7-3, 7-1) stayed a game in front of Bandys and West Lincoln in the conference race with six league games to go.

Maiden had played all of its games on the road this season while waiting for repairs to a flooded outfield was repaired at its on campus field.

Ross Fowler allowed only three hits and struck out three as the Blue Devils registered their first shutout of the year.

Connor Hice took the loss for the Red Devils (0-12, 0-9), who failed to score for the fifth time this season.

Sipe finished with four RBIs for Maiden while Jacob Cauble had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run and Grayson Brown, who scored twice, had a hit and drove in two runs.

Brantley Durham had two hits for Newton-Conover, including a double.

Maiden is at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m., facing Lincolnton in a league game, and Newton-Conover will go to East Lincoln (7 p.m.) on Tuesday for a conference game.

West Lincoln 5, East Lincoln 4, 9 inn.

The Rebels prevailed in a conference game at home, winning a league game that included a combined 15 hits and 10 errors.

The victory kept West Lincoln (9-3, 6-2) tied for second place in the conference with Bandys.

Freshman Garrett Michel went 4-for-4 for the Mustangs (5-6, 4-4), now fifth in the South Fork 2A.

Dylan Burkey led the Rebels with two hits and two RBIs and Bobby Beam drove in two runs.

East Lincoln led 4-0 before West Lincoln scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

A three-run sixth inning tied it at 4 and ultimately sent the game into extra innings.

Reliever Seth Willis went 4 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, two runs (none earned) with no walks and six strikeouts to gain a win.

East Lincoln starter Ty Cobb went 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, four runs (two earned) with three walks and four strikeouts, and reliever Jacob Fisher took the loss after pitching 2 2/3 innings that included issuing four walks.

West Lincoln goes to Lake Norman Charter on Tuesday for a league game while the Mustangs are at home Tuesday (7 p.m.) for a conference game against Newton-Conover.

North Lincoln 14, Lincolnton 2

Wyatt Manus was the winning pitcher as North Lincoln (8-4, 5-3) beat the Wolves (1-8, 1-7) at Lincolnton and ran is win streak to three games.

No other game details were available.

The Knights are in fourth place heading into Tuesday’s home game at 7 p.m. against Bandys.

Lincolnton has lost five straight games and plays at Maiden in a league game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Fred T. Foard 8, West Lincoln 7 (Wednesday)

Mateo Pena picked up this first varsity win, throwing four innings and striking out four in relief, as Foard won a non-conference game at home.

Zac Martin, a freshman struck out two in the seventh inning for Foard, gaining his first career save.

The Tigers stole nine bases and had timely hitting with Will Fry driving in two runs and Corey Seimer adding to hits and driving in a run.

Brett Mason went 3-for-4 and Dylan Smith and Bobby Beam each added two hits for West Lincoln, which scored five runs in the sixth inning after trailing 8-2.

SOFTBALL

North Lincoln 15, Lincolnton 0

The Knights scored two runs in the fifth inning to lead 6-0 then added three runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth inning to win on the road.

North Lincoln improved to 7-1 in the conference and is in first place, a game up on East Lincoln and Newton-Conover.

Emma Evans took the loss for the Wolves, 0-8 in the league, after giving up 13 hits and 14 runs (11 earned).

North Lincoln faces Bandys on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at North Lincoln while Lincolnton is at Maiden on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for a conference game

Maiden 12, Newton-Conover 4

A five-run third inning gave visiting Maiden a six-run lead and the Blue Devils won a conference game after adding four runs in the fifth inning.

The Red Devils scored twice in the third inning to get within 6-2 but were down 10-2 after the Blue Devils batted in the fifth inning.

Emilie Murphy went 3-for-4 and drove in a run for Newton-Conover, Georgia Ingle went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs and Grace Loftin drove in a run.

Maiden, 5-3 in the league and in fourth place, plays Lincolnton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a league game, and the Red Devils – 6-2 and tied with East Lincoln for second place – is at East Lincoln on Tuesday (5 p.m.) to break that tie.

East Lincoln 8, West Lincoln 4

East Lincoln had 13 hits and jumped to an 8-0 lead through five innings en route to beat the Rebels on the road in a conference game.

Hannah Davis had two hits and drove in five runs to spark the Mustangs, 6-2 in the league, and Alexis Duggins went 3-for-4 and Katelyn Crowe had two hits and drove in two runs.

Payton Baker went six innings, giving up seven hits and two runs (one earned) to pick up a win for East Lincoln.

Morgan Chapman, Alyson Eaker and Kinsley Gilmore each had two hits for West Lincoln, and Katie Willis took the loss. Willis pitched five innings, allowing 12 hits, eight runs (all earned).

The Mustangs are at home Tuesday at 5 p.m., facing Newton-Conover in a league game that will break their tie for second.

West Lincoln plays Tuesday afternoon (4 p.m.) at the Huntersville Athletic Park in a conference game against Lake Norman Charter.

Bandys 6, Lake Norman Charter 2

The Trojans won at home, improving to 3-5 in the conference, as they collected nine hits and held the Knights – 1-7 in the league – to five hits.

Bandys led 3-2 after three innings and added four runs in the fourth inning.

Jenna Carter had two hits for Lake Norman Charter and Kristy Seifert took a loss after going six innings. Seifert allowed seven hits, six runs (two earned), walked none and struck out five.

Bandys plays a league game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against North Lincoln while Lake Norman Charter meets West Lincoln on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a conference game at the Huntersville Athletic Park.

North Lincoln 2, Bunker Hill 1 (Wednesday)

The host Knights nipped the Bears in a non-league game with MaKayla Watts leading the way with a home run and she pitched a complete game.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lake Norman Charter 5, Bandys 0 (Thursday)

Ayden Yates scored three goals and assisted on one as the visiting Knights won a league match at Bandys.

Haven Stanley scored Lake Norman Charter’s first goal on an assist by Reese Robinson and it was 2-0 after Yates scored on an assist by Olivia Haraldsson.

Yates’ second goal, assisted by Ally Smith, made it 3-0 before Kasey Hahn scored on an assist by Yates for a four-goal edge.

Yates’ third goal on an assist by Lindsay Rich, made it 5-0.

Lake Norman Charter plays a league match on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at home against West Lincoln.

Bandys faces North Lincoln on the road in a conference match on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
