Tigers allow 1 hit in win over Greyhounds; Trojans

Fred T. Foard High banged out 17 hits and four pitchers combined on a one-hitter as the Tigers overwhelmed host Statesville 17-1 in five innings on Monday to keep the Western Foothills 3A baseball race tight.

Foard (5-1, 3-0) is in a four-way tie with three unbeaten teams – East Lincoln, North Lincoln and St. Stephens – heading into Tuesday’s games.

The Tigers entertain East Lincoln on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and St. Stephens is at North Lincoln.

Foard scored in every inning against Statesville (0-7, 0-3), which lost its 40th straight game.

Lane Essary led the Tigers with three hits, one a double, and Stewart Simmons and Hayden Tabor each had two hits and drove in three runs.

Connor Peschel added a triple and three RBIs, Braxton Tramel had two hits and Josh Harwell drove in two runs for Foard, which has outscored opponents 65-14 this season.

The Tigers led 5-0 after a four-run second inning, and they were ahead 13-0 after scoring five runs in the fourth inning.

Josh Swink was the winning pitcher in relief for Foard, joining with Tabor, Harwell and Aiden Landrum to hold the Greyhounds to one hit. Landrum had three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.

Statesville, outscored 70-10 this season, was shut out for the fourth time. The Greyhounds are at home on Tuesday (5 p.m.), facing West Iredell.

Bandys 19, West Iredell 1, 5 inn.

Two Trojans pitchers combined on a no-hitter as they rolled at home in a non-conference game.

Freshman Drake Tucker went three innings, allowing an earned run, walking three and striking out four, and Spencer Isenhour pitched the other two innings and struck out four.

Bandys (6-3) had 14 hits and overpowered the Warriors (1-6) – who lost their sixth straight game – by scoring nine runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth inning.

Terick Bumgarner had two hits, one a home run, and drove in three runs to spark Bandys. The Trojans had five players with two hits, including Dominic Robinson (two doubles), Logan Williams, Parker DeHart and Parker Stybroski.

Cody Edwards added two RBIs for the Trojans.

Tyler Robbeck took a loss for West Iredell, throwing 1 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits, 10 runs (six earned) with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Trojans — in a four-way tie for first place in the Catawba Valley 2A Athletic with East Burke, Lincolnton and West Lincoln — have won four straight games heading into Tuesday’s conference game against visiting Newton-Conover (7 p.m.).

West Iredell, outscored 55-1 in its last three games and 103-14 this season, plays at Statesville in a Western Foothills 3A game on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Draughn 8, McDowell 4

The Wildcats (6-2) ran their win streak to five games with a non-conference win in Marion.

Draughn led 6-0 by the top of the third inning.

Freshman Trey Jensen and Jacob Mull led the Wildcats, whose last loss was by a run in eight innings to Burns.

Jensen had a double and drove in two runs and Mull also drove in two runs and closed the game in relief (three innings, two hits, two runs with one earned, two strikeouts).

Draughn starter John Robert Abernathy went four innings, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) with four walks and three strikeouts.

Ethan Hensley had two hits, including a double and Michael Lewis had a double and drove in two runs for the Titans.

Draughn is at home on Friday (6 p.m.), facing Mitchell County in a Western Highlands 1A-2A game.

Cherryville 12, Maiden 1

Tyler Goodson had Maiden’s only hit in a home non-conference loss, dropping the Blue Devils to 3-5.They’ve scored one or fewer runs in four games this season.

Hayden Fleury pitched 1 1/3 innings and took a loss. He gave up three hits, six runs (all earned), walked five and struck out three.

Maiden used six pitchers and they issued nine walks.

The Ironmen scored four runs in the first inning and were up 11-0 before Maiden scored its run in the fourth inning.

Maiden plays a Catawba Valley 2A Athletic game at Bunker Hill on Tuesday (7 p.m.).

Polk County 10, Patton 6

Polk County erased a five-run deficit to win a Mountain Athletic 7 2A game at Polk County.

Chan Barker led the Wolverines, going 4-for-4 and driving in two runs. Angus Weaver and Jackson Beiler each drove in two runs for Polk County.

Patton led 5-0 before the Wolverines scored twice in the second inning and three runs in the third inning for a 5-all tie. Five runs in the fifth inning put Polk County up 10-5.

Micha Hill was the winning Wolverines pitcher, going five innings. He allowed four hits, six runs (five earned), walked two and struck out four.

Patton plays a non-league game on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against McDowell.

North Iredell 8, West Lincoln 0

Freshman Thomas Shuemaker had a double among his two hits and drove in two runs as the Raiders (3-4) gained their first shutout win of the sesason.

Jake Robertson, the third North Iredell pitcher, went 5 1/3 innings. He allowed one hit, no runs, walked three and struck out three.

West Lincoln (3-5) had a three-game win streak halted and was shut out for the third time this season.

North Iredell faces Hickory on the road Tuesday (6 p.m.) in a Western Foothills 3A game while West Lincoln battles West Caldwell (7 p.m.) in a Catawba Valley Athletic 2A game at West Lincoln.

SOFTBALL

Alexander Central 8, Mooresville 6

The visiting Cougars held off the Blue Devils, who scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, to gain a non-conference victory.

Petyon Price, batting second in the lineup, went 3-for-5, Anna Jordan added three hits and winning pitcher Faith Carrigan had two hits for Alexander Central (9-0).

The Cougars had 14 hits and got two RBIs each by Laney Wike and Kenzie Church.

Ellie Goins had three of Mooresville’s 11 hits and Bently Meadows had three hits and drove in two runs.

Carrigan (9-0) tossed a complete game, allowing five earned runs, and she walked six and struck out seven.

Mooresville starter Morgan Smith took a loss, going 3 1/3 innings. She allowed nine hits, six runs (all earned) with one walk and four strikeouts.

Alexander Central led 6-1 through four innings and 7-1 when Mooresville scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Cougars start their Northwestern 3A-4A schedule at Ashe County on Tuesday (6 p.m.).

GIRLS SOCCER

Asheville 2, Hibriten 0

Lilly Severance had two goals, both in the second half, as the Cougars blanked the visiting Panthers in a non-conference match.

Isabella Bevans had two saves for Asheville.

Hibriten plays a non-league match at home on Friday against Asheville Roberson.

Patton 3, West Caldwell 1

The Panthers scored two first-half goals and won a non-conference match on the road.

Patton faces East Rutherford on Tuesday at Patton (6 p.m.), and West Caldwell has a Catawba Valley 2A Athletic match at Newton-Conover at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
