WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS: Bandys boys win at West Caldwell for first time in school history

LENOIR — Bandys High’s boys spoiled the return of Billy Anderson to West Caldwell as head basketball coach on Tuesday night, nipping the Warriors 72-69 to win at West Caldwell for the first time in school history.

The game was tied at 16 after one quarter and Bandys (1-0) led 36-32 at halftime. No other game details were available.

The Trojans, 15-11 last season, were winless in 23 previous games at West Caldwell and had beaten the Warriors only once in 44 games coming in (at Bandys in 2015-16).

Anderson returned to West Caldwell, where he was a star player, after guiding East Carteret for 11 seasons and to a state title in 2015. He spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater and one season as head varsity boys’ coach at East Burke before going to East Carteret.

Bandys’ next game is Tuesday at St. Stephens while West Caldwell plays Friday night at home against Draughn.

Freedom Invitational boys’ pairings set

MORGANTON – Freedom High’s boys will play the fourth game of the opening day of the Freedom Christmas Invitational, facing A.C. Reynolds at 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 26.

Tournament pairings were released on Tuesday for a three-day event (all games at Freedom) in an eight-team tournament sponsored by Byrd, Byrd, McMahon and Denton.

On the opening day, Asheville Christian will face R-S Central at 1 p.m., McDowell and Draughn play at 2:30 p.m. and North Buncombe and East Burke battle at 5:30 p.m.

There are four games scheduled on Dec. 27, with semifinals at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and four games on Dec. 28 with the title game tipping at 8:30 p.m.

Pairings for the girls’ portion of the tournament will be released soon.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bandys 51, West Caldwell 50

LENOIR –Emma Dutka’s 3-pointer from the right corner in the final 10 seconds lifted the Trojans to a win in their first game of the season. She scored eight points.

Logan Dutka led Bandys with 10 points.

The Trojans trailed by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter and they were behind by nine points with 2 ½ minutes to play.

Bandys finished 10-14 last season, losing its last three games and nine of its last 10.

West Caldwell, 5-20 last year, has lost 10 straight games after falling in its final nine last season.

The Trojans next play on Tuesday at St. Stephens, and West Caldwell is at home Friday night against Draughn.

Bunker Hill 65, Newton-Conover 53

NEWTON—Addie Wray led three Bunker Hill players in double digits as the Bears rallied to beat Newton-Conover in the return of Sylvia White for her third tenure as head coach of the Red Devils.

The Red Devils (0-1) led 10-4 after one quarter and 26-22 at halftime. But the Bears (1-0) scored 29 third-quarter points and headed to the final quarter leading 51-38.

Maddie Stotts added 13 points and Crystany White had 11 for the Bears.

Chyna Cornwell had a game-high 37 points for Newton-Conover.

White — who replaced former WNBA player Andrea Stinson after four seasons — coached the Red Devils from 1988-89 through 1991-92 and also from 2000-01 through 2003-04. Her 1989-90 team was state 2A runner-up and her 1991-92 team won the state 2A championship.

The Bears are at home Wednesday night to face Maiden.

Newton-Conover plays at Hickory on Friday night.

WRESTLING

Indians roll, unbeaten after 13 matches

HICKORY – St. Stephens won twice, beating Southlake Christian 72-10 and Maiden 71-0 to remain unbeaten (13-0).

The Indians are preparing to play host to their Indian Classic tournaments, starting with the junior varsity event on Friday with a 5 p.m. start and the varsity tournament – in year No. 47 – on Saturday at 9 a.m.
