HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Maiden’s James, Sipe combine to no-hit Red Devils

Maiden High remained unbeaten on Wednesday in baseball, opening the South Fork 2A schedule with a 10-0, no-hit victory over Newton-Conover on the road.

Junior left-hander Dalton James and senior right-hander Bain Sipe combined to no-hit the Red Devils.

James pitched five innings, striking out 10 and walking two and then gave way to Sipe, who struck out four over two innings as the Blue Devils improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Maiden has a non-league game at home Wednesday at 7 p.m. at home against Bunker Hill.

The Red Devils are at home Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., facing Hickory.

Hickory 5, McDowell 2

Reliever Zach Smith struck out five in three innings of relief as the Red Tornadoes started Northwestern 3A-4A play with a victory in Marion.

Blake Kiser started for Hickory and scattered three hits over four inning.

Smith and Henry Stewart each had two hits and drove in a run for the Red Tornadoes.

Hickory plays at Newton-Conover on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a non-league game.

McDowell is at home Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., facing Patton.

South Caldwell 9, Watauga 5

In a Northwestern 3A-4A opener in Boone, the Spartans won behind Avery Raynor, who hit fifth in the lineup and drove in five runs and hit a home run.

Garrett Hamby, Austin Raynor, Isaiah Kirby and Ryan Parrish each added an RBI for South Caldwell.

Hamby got a win, pitching six innings. He gave up five runs (all earned), walked to and struck out seven.

Watauga starter Sterling Sauls took a loss, throwing 31/3 innings. He gave up five hits, five runs (all earned), walked four and struck out four.

Rivers Goce had two RBIs for Watauga, which had six hits.

South Caldwell plays a non-league game on Friday at home (6:30 p.m.) against Charlotte Christian.

Watauga is at West Caldwell on Wednesday for a non-conference game.

Bunker Hill 5, East Burke 1

The Bears (3-0) won their Northwestern Foothills 2A opener in Icard, collecting 10 hits.

Seth Pennington, Carson Sigmon, Ethan Hildebran and Jordan Yoder each hit two hits for Bunker Hill. Sigmon drove in three runs and Pennington and Hildebran each drove in one.

Chance Carden pitched four innings, allowing two hits and walking one and striking out six for the Bears.

Bunker Hill travels to Maiden on Wednesday (7 p.m.) while the Cavs are at home for a conference game against Hibriten on Friday (7 p.m.).

Bandys 14, West Caldwell 3 (Friday)

Elic Yount had two hits and drove in two runs and Peyton Laney hit a home run and had two RBIs as the Trojans won in six innings in Lenoir.

Nic Andrews was the winning pitcher and Noah Clay took the loss for West Caldwell.

SOFTBALL

Alexander Central 6, Bandys 3

Faith Carrigan had two hits and drove in four runs and threw a complete game as the visiting Cougars (4-0) edged the Trojans.

Each team had eight hits.

Ashley Seagle had a hit and drove in two runs for Alexander Central.

Leadoff hitter Caroline McIntosh went 3-for-4 for Bandys and Bailey Burton added two hits. Annie Andrews and Burton drove in runs for the Trojans.

Carrigan gave up three runs (all earned), walked one and struck out nine.

Starter Riley Fox took the loss for Bandys, pitching five innings. She gave up six hits, four runs (two earned), walked two and struck out three.

The Cougars broke a 1-all tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Alexander Central plays Draughn at Alexander Central on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and Bandys opens South Fork 2A play on Tuesday at home against Lake Norman Charter (6 p.m.).

GIRLS SOCCER

Maiden 5, North Gaston 3

The Blue Devils won on the road, led by Brittny Cabalceta’s two goals.

Liz Mroz, Gracie Arrowood and Shelby Pettit each added one goal for Maiden, and Arrowood, Pettit and Pachia Khang each had an assist.

Maiden plays at St. Stephens on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Hickory 5, Hibriten 1 (Friday)

Madeline Mosteller had two goals as the Red Tornadoes won a non-league match at home.

Zoey Tucker, Izzi Wood and Hannah Griesen each added a goal for Hickory (2-1) and Addie Barrier, Nicole Kozcichek and Wood each provided an assist.

Taylor Rose had four saves in goal for the Red Tornadoes.

Hickory won the junior varsity match 5-0 with Olivia Eaton and Harper Everley each scoring twice.

Hickory goes to Fred T. Foard for a non-conference match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Hibriten is at home against St. Stephens on Friday.

GOLF

Warriors win league opener

West Caldwell shot a 152, led by Noah Bumgarner’s 35, to win a nine-hole Northwestern Foothills 2A event at Hampton Heights.

The Warriors finished 34 strokes ahead of Fred T. Foard.

Five golfers – Max Cranford of Foard, West Caldwell’s Lexton Ford, Hunter Baker and Jordan Bumgarner and Maddox Whittington of Hibriten – shot 39s.

Team scores: 1. W. Caldwell 152; 2. Fred T. Foard 186; 3. Hibriten 192; 4. E. Burke 200; 5. Patton 223; 6. Draughn 235; 7. W. Iredell 239; 8. Bunker Hill 240.

Medalist: Noah Bumgarner (WC) 35.

Knights, Rebels tie in South Fork 2A

Lake Norman Charter and West Lincoln tied, each shooting 162 over nine holes, as the South Fork 2A opened its league schedule at Verdict Ridge.

East Lincoln was third, one stroke back, and Carter Busse of Lake Norman Charter was medalist with a 36.

There were seven golfers at 40, tying for fourth place.

The South Fork 2A plays at Glen Oaks in Maiden on Monday, a nine-hole match that starts at 3:30 p.m.

Lake Norman Charter 23, Pine Lake Prep 10

Peyton Turner scored six goals and had two assists, leading the Knights to a victory on the road.

Lake Norman Charter plays Mountain Island Charter on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lake Norman Charter.

Lake Norman Charter 12, Christ The King 6 (Friday)

Four goals by Brandon Webster sparked the Knights in their road victory.

Kace Burnette had 13 saves.
