HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Cougars’ Hinkle no-hits Wilkes Central in softball

Supported by a three-run lead after Alexander Central High scored in the first inning, Kara Hinkle threw a no-hitter on Thursday as the visiting Cougars rolled past Wilkes Central 6-0 in six innings in softball.

Hinkle did not walk anyone and struck out four as Alexander Central improved to 3-0.

Leadoff hitter Mattie Starnes and Ashley Seagle, batting cleanup, each went 3-for-4 to spark the Cougars and Seagle drove in four runs. Faith Carrigan and Peyton Price eac added two hits for Alexander Central, which had 15 hits.

Carrigan, Karen Kerley and Rylee Elder each drove in two runs for the Cougars.

Isabelle Curry took the loss for the Eagles. She pitched five innings, allowing 12 hits, 10 runs (all earned), walked two and struck out five.

Alexander Central had a three-run first inning, led 7-0 after scoring three runs in the fourth inning and scored six runs in the sixth inning.

The Cougars play a non-league game on Monday at 6 p.m. at Bandys.

Bunker Hill 13, East Rutherford 3

Winning pitcher Payton Bryant hit a home run, drove in two runs and walked twice as the Bears won a non-conference game at home.

Bryant pitched four innings, walking six and striking out eight.

Bunker Hill had 16 hits, led by Addie Wray’s three. Camryn Bryant, Kylee Houser, Alexis McCrary and Grace Pennington added two each for the Bears.

Bunker Hill broke a 2-all tie with seven runs in the fourth inning.

The Bears are at home Friday at 6 p.m., facing St. Stephens.

West Lincoln 10, East Burke 0 (Wednesday)

The Rebels pounded the Cavs in Icard.

Reece Abernathy, Allie Cook and Jayden Hicks each had a hit for East Burke.

Katie Willis was the winning pitcher for West Lincoln.

West Lincoln plays at Cherryville on Friday (4:30 p.m.), and the Cavs open Northwestern Foothills 2A play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at East Burke.

BASEBALL

Wilkes Central 4, Alexander Central 2

The Cougars outhit the Eagles but fell in a non-conference game at Wilkes Central.

Wilkes Central had four hits, one each by Aiken Minton, Nick Hartley, Jonah Brooks and Landon Perry. Brooks drove in two runs and Hunter Johnson and Perry added an RBI each.

The Cougars (1-1) had six hits, led by two by Eli Walsh (hitting ninth in the order) while Dalton Stikeleather and Kade Smith collected an RBI each.

Perry pitched a complete game for the Eagles, walking one and striking out one.

Alexander Central starter Zach Herman left after 2 1/3 innings (four hits, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts) and reliever Mason Chapman-Mays eventually took a loss. Chapman threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing no hits but two runs (both earned) with four walks and three strikeouts.

Alexander Central used four pitchers.

The Cougars play Davie County in a non-conference game at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Taylorsville.

Postponements

Thursday’s South Caldwell at Hibriten game was postponed by lightning and rescheduled for Friday at 4 p.m.

Hibriten’s game scheduled Friday at Ashe County will be reset for another date.
