HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Unbeaten Red Devils cruise past Bandys in soccer

Alduar Ozuna scored a goal in each half — and Newton-Conover High had five in the first half — en route to a 7-1 victory at Bandys on Wednesday night that opened the South Fork 2A schedule for both schools.

Dilan Esperilla, Jason Agreda, Orlando Gildo and Manuel Marquinez joined Ozuna in scoring first-half goals for the Red Devils (8-0-1, 1-0), who have 18 wins and one tie in their last 19 conference matches.

Ozuna made it 6-0 with a goal in the second half and, after Francisco Tapia scored for the Red Devils, Ben Joseph had the only goal for Bandys.

The Red Devils won their last three Southern District 7 2A matches and then tied West Lincoln in the 2015 season and they were 14-0 in winning the SD-7 2A title last season.

Newton-Conover has another league match on Thursday at 6 p.m., playing at Maiden, and Bandys goes to Lake Norman Charter on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match.

Lake Norman Charter 10, North Lincoln 1

Lake Norman Charter, playing at home, got two goals from four players to beat North Lincoln in a South Fork 2A match.

Connor Hahn, Joey Fieno, Kevin Csehoski and Joe Wessler each scored twice for Lake Norman Charter, Elijah Corbin added one goal and four assists and Collin Petty scored once.

Fieno’s goals were unassisted and he had an assist on a Corbin’s goal that put Lake Norman Charter up 7-1.

Trace Pigg had an unassisted goal for North Lincoln.

Lake Norman Charter is at home Thursday at 6 p.m., playing Bandys, and North Lincoln is also at home Thursday at 6 p.m. against Lincolnton.

Maiden 8, West Lincoln 1

Visiting Maiden scored four goals in each half to win its South Fork 2A opener over the Rebels.

The Blue Devils are at home Thursday at 6 p.m., facing Newton-Conover, and West Lincoln plays Thursday at 6 p.m. at East Lincoln.

Hickory 6, Freedom 2

The Red Tornadoes had five first-half goals to win a Northwestern 3A-4A match at home over the Patriots.

Hickory faces Watauga in a conference match on Monday in Boone at 6 p.m. while Freedom has a conference match on Thursday at 6 p.m. against St. Stephens at the Catawba River Soccer Complex and meets Alexander Central on Monday at 6 p.m. in Morganton.

Watauga 2, Alexander Central 1, OT

Lisandro Lopez scored the only goal for the host Cougars in a Northwestern 3A-4A match.

Watauga’s home match on Thursday against Northwest Guilford has been cancelled, and the Pioneers face Hickory on Monday at 6 p.m. in Boone.

The Cougars’ next match is a conference battle on Monday at 6 p.m. at Freedom.

Watauga’s junior varsity beat Alexander Central 6-0.

Draughn 5, East Rutherford 2

At East Rutherford, the Wildcats scored four times in the opening half en route to a non-conference victory.

Draughn plays a Northwestern Foothills 2A match on Monday at East Burke.

VOLLEYBALL

Fred T. Foard 3, East Burke 1

WESTHost Foard won a Northwestern 3A-4A match over the Cavs 25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 25-11 to reach 4-0 in the conference.

East Burke, falling to 1-3 in the league, got 12 kills by Pressley Kiser and 22 digs by Lindsey Cales, plus nine kills by Erica Clontz, seven blocks by Riley Haas and 12 digs by Anna Suddreth.

Foard has a makeup league match on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Draughn while the Cavs are at home Monday at 6 p.m. against Draughn.

West Iredell 3, Hibriten 0

The Warriors stayed unbeaten in the Northwestern Foothills 2A – and a half-game up on Fred T. Foard – by beating the Panthers 3-0 in Lenoir.

West Iredell plays a makeup league match on Thursday at 6 p.m. at home against Bunker Hill.

The Panthers have a non-league match Thursday at 6 p.m. at home against Avery County.
