HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: St. Stephens JVs score 48, overwhelm Fred T. Foard

St. Stephens High had 322 yards of total offense and got rushing scores from five players on Thursday night, rolling past Fred T. Foard 48-0 on the road in junior varsity football.

Freshman Rhyeem Craig averaged 13.6 yards per carry and scored two rushing TDs to lead St. Stephens (2-1).

Matthew Hancock, Zach McLauchlin, Luke Johnson and Malik Hilton each added a rushing score for the Indians.

St. Stephens had 18 players with at least one tackle with freshman linebacker Sullivan Johnson leading the way with seven tackles, one assist and a sack.

Foard (0-4) had only two first downs.

The Indians start Northwestern 3A-4A play next Thursday, playing Freedom at home at 6:30 p.m.

Foard — outscored 126-12 to start the season — has a Northwestern Foothills 2A game next Thursday at home against Patton.

Bandys 48, Hickory 6

The Trojans pounded the Red Tornadoes at Barger Stadium to improve to 2-1.

Hickory fell to 0-3 with the first two losses of the season to Statesville and Newton-Conover.

Bandys opens its South Fork 2A schedule at home next Thursday at 7 p.m., battling Maiden.

The Red Tornadoes’ play their Northwestern 3A-4A opener at home next Thursday, facing McDowell.

VOLLEYBALL

Maiden 3, Newton-Conover 0

The Blue Devils rebounded after back-to-back South Fork 2A losses to beat the visiting Red Devils 25-7, 25-11, 25-13.

Kyle Morgan had 12 kills and six aces to lead Maiden, 4-2 in the conference, with Abbey Smith adding seven kills and Faith Herman posting 29 assists.

Maiden travels to Lincolnton on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. conference match and the Red Devils will be at home, also at 6 p.m., to face league-leading East Lincoln.

Watauga 3, Freedom 0

The Pioneers won 25-18, 25-11, 25-11 in Morganton to remain unbeaten in the Northwestern 3A-4A and a game up on second-place Alexander Central.

Brooke Byrd’s 13 kills and eight digs led Watauga, now 6-0 in the conference, and Emma Clark added nine kills and three blocks.

Rebekah Farthing had 13 kills and five aces for the Pioneers, who got nine digs each from Grace Hagaman and Jasmine VanDyke.

Watauga is at home Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a league match against West Caldwell while the Patriots, 2-4 in the conference travel for a 6 p.m. match against McDowell in Marion.

Alexander Central 3, Hickory 2

In a showdown at Hickory for sole possession of second place in the Northwestern 3A-4A, the Cougars prevailed.

Alexander Central is 5-1 in the conference and just ahead of Hickory and St. Stephens, both 4-2.

The Cougars’ next match is Tuesday at South Caldwell.

Hickory joins Cox Mill and Marvin Ridge for matches on Saturday at Marvin Ridge.

St. Stephens 3, South Caldwell 0

The Indians won 25-9, 25-14, 25-9) at home in a Northwestern 3A-4A match, and they’re in a third place tie with Hickory (each at 4-2).

Hickory and St. Stephens battle Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a conference match at St. Stephens.

South Caldwell, 1-5 in the league, meets Alexander Central in a league match Tuesday at 6 p.m. at South Caldwell.

Bandys 3, Lake Norman Charter 1

At Lake Norman Charter, the Trojans won 25-22, 25-15, 10-25, 25-19 to improve to 4-2 in the South Fork 2A.

Bandys plays a non-league home match Monday at 6 p.m. against Bunker Hill while Lake Norman Charter goes to West Lincoln on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a conference match.

East Lincoln 3, West Lincoln 0

The Mustangs remained atop the South Fork 2A standings with a home 25-11, 25-11, 25-15 victory over the Rebels.

East Lincoln goes to Newton-Conover on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. league match, and West Lincoln will be at home Tuesday at 6 p.m., playing Lake Norman Charter.
