HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: St. Stephens JVs run win streak to 4 games

St. Stephens High ran its junior varsity win streak to four games on Thursday night, downing McDowell 30-16 in Marion.

Freshman running back Zak McLaughlin ran 20 times for 114 yards and a touchdown to lead the Indians (4-1, 2-0 Northwestern 3A-4A) and freshmen Luke Johnson and Ryheem Craig each added a rushing TD for the Indians.

St. Stephens quarterback Malik Hilton threw a scoring pass to Hayden Kerley and also scored on a two-point conversion.

Sophomore Matthew Hancock, a linebacker, led the Indians’ defense with four tackles, four assists, one sack and a fumble recovery. Freshman linebacker Sullivan Johnson added four tackles and four assists while Kerley and Troy Hicks had interceptions.

St. Stephens plays West Caldwell at St. Stephens next Thursday in a conference game and McDowell (2-3, 1-1) has a league game the same night at South Caldwell.

Alexander Central 34, Watauga 12

The Cougars ran for 366 yards, getting 259 of those one 26 carries from Dayente Calhoun, to win a Northwestern 3A-4A game in Boone.

Calhoun scored on runs of 2, 56 and 27 yards to lead Alexander Central (5-0, 2-0).

The Cougars led 14-12 at the half and won after limiting the Pioneers (2-2, 0-2) to 167 yards, 104 of that rushing by Jaxon Harmon.

Harmon had TD runs of 51 and 3 yards to get Watauga in front 12-0, but the Cougars did the rest of the scoring.

Colston Yount had 71 rushing yards on 12 carries and Daniel Morgan’s 17-yard TD run scored the go-ahead points for Alexander Central with three minutes, 19 seconds left in the opening half.

JaiKwaun Tilley’s seven tackles led the Cougars on defense while Sal Barletta had nine tackles, 1 ½ for lost yardage, to lead Watauga’s defense.

Alexander Central plays Freedom in Taylorsville next Thursday in a league game, and Watauga will play the same night at Hickory in a conference game.

VOLLEYBALL

Watauga 3, Hickory 0

The Pioneers won 25-14, 25-23, 25-22 on the road to stay unbeaten in the Northwestern 3A-4A and in first place.

Rebekah Farthing’s 14 digs and 13 kills sparked the Pioneers, with Brooke Byrd adding 13 kills and 12 digs, Grace Hagaman posting 12 digs and Grace Hayes adding 26 assists.

Hickory, 7-3 in the league, got 15 kills by Allison Gambill, six aces from Alli Sweeney and 25 assists by Morgan Anderson in the loss.

Watauga is at home Tuesday to face St. Stephens and the Red Tornadoes go to West Caldwell.

Alexander Central 3, Freedom 0

The Cougars won 25-10, 25-14, 25-12 at home to move into second place in the Northwestern 3A-4A after league-leading Watauga beat Hickory.

Alexander Central is 8-2 in the conference, two games back of Watauga with four league matches to go.

The Cougars play Tuesday at McDowell and the Patriots also play Tuesday, at home against South Caldwell.

St. Stephens 3, West Caldwell 0

The Indians won at home – 25-9, 25-8, 25-6 – in a Northwestern 3A-4A match that left them 7-3 and tied for third place with Hickory.

The Indians play at league-leading Watauga on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and the Warriors will be at home against Hickory.

East Lincoln 3, North Lincoln 2

Playing at home, the Mustangs won to open a two-game lead in the South Fork 2A race with four league matches left in the regular season.

East Lincoln is 10-0 and in front of North Lincoln and Maiden, both 8-2, heading into the final week of the regular season.

East Lincoln can inch closer to the title on Tuesday when it plays a league match at 6 p.m. at Bandys.

Maiden 3, Lake Norman Charter 1

The Blue Devils won on the road – 25-27, 25-15, 25-12, 25-14 – in a South Fork 2A match, moving into a tie for second place with North Lincoln.

Kylie Morgan and Abbey Smith combined for 33 kills – 21 and 12, respectively – while Evan Sherrill had 10 kills and Faith Herman provided four aces and 48 assists.

Morgan is approaching 1,000 career kills.

Maiden plays North Lincoln at Maiden on Tuesday in a key match at 6 p.m.
