HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Newton-Conover moves into first in South Fork 2A soccer

There’s a new yet familiar leader in South Fork 2A high school boys’ soccer after Monday night’s matches.

With East Lincoln beating Maiden on the road, handing the Blue Devils their first conference loss, Newton-Conover moved into sole possession of first place.

The Red Devils beat visiting North Lincoln 5-2 and they’re 4-0-0 in the league with East Lincoln and Maiden now sharing second place at 4-1-0 each.

West Lincoln 3, Bandys 2

At Bandys, the Rebels overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat the Trojans in a South Fork 2A match.

West Lincoln moved to 2-3-0 in league play and Bandys fell to 1-4-0.

Next up for the Rebels is a match at East Lincoln on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and Bandys goes to Lake Norman Charter on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match.

Lake Norman Charter 4, Lincolnton 2

The Knights, 3-2-0 in the conference, got a goal each from Sloan Schwarzenegger, Elijah Corbin, Connor Hahn and Joe Wessler to win on the road in a South Fork 2A match.

Ives Jenkins and Brian Sedano scored for the Wolves, 1-3-0 in the league.

Lake Norman Charter plays Bandys at home on Thursday at 6 p.m. while the Wolves go to North Lincoln on Thursday for a 5 p.m. match.

St. Stephens 5, Alexander Central 1

In a match with all the scoring in the second half, the Indians won in Taylorsville to stay atop the Northwestern 3A-4A standings at 3-0-1 in league play.

St. Stephens meets South Caldwell on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in a league match at St. Stephens.

Alexander Central, 3-1-0 in the league and tied with Hickory for second place, has a key match at Hickory on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Patton 8, Draughn 1

At Draughn, the Panthers rolled in a Northwestern Foothills 2A match. They scored four goals in each half to improve to 4-0 and hold first place just in front of Fred T. Foard.

Patton is at home Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for a conference match against East Burke and Draughn has a conference match at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Bunker Hill.

Fred T. Foard 3, Bunker Hill 1

The Tigers overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to edge the Bears at Foard in a Northwestern Foothills 2A match.

Foard is 4-1 in the league and a half-game in front of third-place Hibriten. The Tigers play at Hibriten in a conference match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

The Bears, 0-4-0 in the league, plays at home Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in a conference battle with Draughn.

VOLLEYBALL

Draughn 3, Patton 0

Kirsten Powell had 11 kills and Chloe Gary had 10 digs and 24 assists as the Wildcats won a Northwestern Foothills 2A match at Draughn.

Shaedyn Housh added seven kills and seven assists for Draughn, 3-5 in the league, and Kayleigh Sigmon contributed 22 digs.

The Wildcats are on the road Wednesday at 6 p.m., playing Bunker Hill, and Patton (0-8 in the conference) is at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for a conference encounter with East Burke.

West Iredell 3, East Burke 0

The Warriors won to stay in first place in the Northwestern Foothills 2A at 8-0, with Fred T. Foard a half-game back at 7-1.

East Burke travels to Patton for a league match Wednesday at 6 p.m., while West Iredell now idle until Saturday when it goes to Hickory for matches with Hickory and West Henderson.

FOOTBALL

East Lincoln pre-sale tickets

East Lincoln High will pre-sale tickets on Thursday and Friday for its varsity football game against rival Lincolnton on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The tickets can be purchased from 11 a.m. to noon on those days in the lobby of the school.

Gates open on Friday at 6 p.m.
