HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Newton-Conover boys off to 2-0 start in soccer

Newton-Conover High’s boys are off to a 2-0 start in soccer after winning on Saturday.

The Red Devils edged Richlands 4-2 at the Battle at the Beach in Jacksonville after downing East Duplin 5-1 in the same event on Friday night.

East Lincoln also played in the event, falling 4-0 on Friday night to Croatan and Dixon beat the Mustangs 5-0 on Saturday morning.

Newton-Conover travels to Mooresville for its next match – at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday – and East Lincoln visits Shelby on Monday for a 6:30 p.m. match.

Wilkes Central 1, Alexander Central 0: In the Wilkes County Cup championship match on Saturday, the Eagles second a goal late in the first half and made it enough to win the title over the Cougars.

Alexander Central travels to play West Wilkes on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start.

VOLLEYBALL

Lake Norman Charter splits: The Knights went 1-1 on Saturday in a tournament at Southlake Christian.

After beating Durham Academy 25-16, 25-16, Lake Norman Charter faced Southlake Christian, which won in three sets (25-17, 16-25, 25-20).

The Knights’ next match is at home on Monday at 6 p.m. against Community School of Davidson.
