HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Mustangs top Maiden, grab first in South Fork 2A volleyball

East Lincoln High remained undefeated and took over first place in South Fork 2A volleyball on Tuesday night, beating visiting Maiden 3-1.

The Mustangs (9-0, 5-0) — the league’s defending champion — won 25-19 and 25-16 to open a lead. After Maiden won the fourth set 25-23, East Lincoln won 25-22 to break its tie with Maiden (8-4, 4-1) for first place in the league.

East Lincoln won last year’s conference title by one game over the Blue Devils.

Abbey Smith had 10 kills and Sarah Wicker had 12 kills and four blocks in the loss at East Lincoln. Faith Herman provided 37 assists and five aces and Lauren Xayvaong made 15 digs.

East Lincoln plays a non-conference match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Forestview and goes to West Lincoln for a league match on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Maiden plays a league match on the road Thursday at 6 p.m., facing Newton-Conover.

Lake Norman Charter 3, Lincolnton 0

Hope Curtis’ 18 digs, seven aces and 16 serves with no errors sparked Lake Norman Charter’s home victory over the Wolves in a South Fork 2A match.

The Knights (7-2, 3-2) won 25-10, 25-16, 25-16.

Taylor Adleman had eight kills, nine digs and a block for Lake Norman Charter while Makyla Martin added four kills, eight digs, five aces, 10 assists and a block.

Lauren Leeper provided the Knights eight aces, three digs and seven assists, and Liberty Harris contributed four kills and three digs.

Lake Norman Charter has a non-league match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Community School of Davidson.

On Thursday, the Knights play at Bandys in a conference match at 6 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Hickory 8, McDowell 0

Brayden Rowland scored three goals and Alex Gonzales had two as the Red Tornadoes (4-1-4, 1-0) won a Northwestern 3A-4A match at home.

Hector Diaz, Conner Stewart and Warren Daniels each scored once for Hickory.

Ben Boston had three assists, Aydan Kelly had two and Rowland and Diaz each had one for the Red Tornadoes.

Harrison Boston and Peyton Winkler combined in goal for a shutout.

The Hickory junior varsity beat the Titans 5-1 with Austin Skoog scoring four goals and Ernesto Poppante the other.

Hickory’s JV is 7-0 overall, 1-0 in the conference.

The Hickory varsity will play Freedom on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Catawba River Soccer Complex.

East Lincoln 6, Lake Norman Charter 2 (Monday)

Chase Gilley led the visiting Mustangs past the Knights in a South Fork 2A match.

Logan Gilley scored twice for East Lincoln and Miller Towson had the other goal.

Noah Graden provided two assists for the Mustangs and Aaron Singletary had one.

East Lincoln travels to Lincolnton on Wednesday for a conference match at 6 p.m.

GIRLS GOLF

Lake Norman Charter wins again

Lake Norman Charter won a South Fork 2A nine-hole match at Rock Barn, shooting 147 to edge Maiden by six strokes.

East Lincoln (168) took third, West Lincoln was fourth (169) and North Lincoln (191) finished fifth.

Sophie Laliberte of East Lincoln was medalist.

Josie Fisher’s 45 led Lake Norman Charter with Georgia Chapman shooting 48 and Tess Palmer carding a 54.
