Bandys beats Newton-Conover, sits in third place in conference race

Abby Smith’s eight kills and 10 digs and 36 assists by Faith Herman sparked Maiden High’s 3-0 volleyball victory over West Lincoln on the road Tuesday night that kept the Blue Devils in second place in the South Fork 2A.

Maiden won 25-10, 25-16, 25-6 to improve to 7-2 in the conference, staying a game up in the standings on Bandys (6-3), and North Lincoln entered Tuesday’s play at 5-3.

Sarah Wicker had 12 kills and Isabella Abernahty added nine for the Blue Devils while Lauren Xayavong finished with 14 digs and Peyton McRee delivered five aces.

Maiden’s two league losses are 3-1 to East Lincoln and 3-0 to Bandys, and the Blue Devils face Lake Norman Charter at Maiden on Thursday at 6 p.m.

West Lincoln, 2-7 in the South Fork 2A and in sixth place, meets Newton-Conover on the road on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Bandys 3, Newton-Conover 0

Emma Dutka provided 12 kills, nine digs and eight assists and Katie Townsend had 15 digs and three aces as the Trojans won a South Fork 2A match at home.

Bandys won 25-8, 25-20, 25-15 to go to 6-3 in the conference. The Trojans are in third place, behind Maiden and East Lincoln, and North Lincoln also had three league losses heading into Tuesday’s match at Lake Norman Charter.

Bailey Reynolds added three of the Trojans’ 10 aces and 10 assists while Toriy Culliver finished with seven kills and four blocks, April Delacanal made seven kills, Shi Pope provided 17 digs and Sydney Wilson finished with five blocks.

Bandys has won two straight league matches and four of its last five since a 3-0 loss at home to league-leading East Lincoln on Sept. 6.

The Trojans’ next match is Thursday at Lincolnton at 6 p.m.

Newton-Conover — 1-8 in the conference and tied with Lincolnton for last place — faces West Lincoln in Newton on Thursday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS GOLF

Titans win again;  Hickory’s McDonald repeats as medalist

McDowell shot a 125 at the Marion Lake Golf Club on Tuesday to edge Freedom by 15 strokes and win a Northwestern 3A-4A match.

Anna McDonald of Hickory shot a 35 in the fourth league match of the season and she has been medalist in all of the conference matches this season.

Maiden wins league match at Glen Oaks (Tuesday)

Maiden shot a 309 on Monday at Glen Oaks, edging Lake Norman Charter by two strokes in a South Fork 18-hole match.

Camryn Lamp of Newton-Conover was medalist at 81.

Josie Fisher (100), Georgia Chapman (104) and Tess Palmer (107) led Lake Norman Charter.

West Lincoln took third at 338, followed by East Lincoln (345) and North Lincoln (376).

The league’s next match, nine holes, is Wednesday at the Lincolnton Country Club.
