HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Maiden downs N-C in volleyball, still in second place

Lauren Xayavong’s 12 digs and six aces paced Maiden High as it won 25-11, 25-12, 25-12 over Newton-Conover on Thursday night on the road in a South Fork 2A volleyball match to remain in second place.

Abbey Smith and Lily Grissom each had nine kills, Abby Driscoll made six kills and Faith Herman finished with 30 assists for Maiden.

The Blue Devils are 5-1 in the conference, a game back of East Lincoln and a game in front of third-place Bandys.

Maiden plays Lincolnton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Maiden while Newton-Conover’s next match is Monday at Bunker Hill (6 p.m.). The Red Devils’ next league match is Tuesday (6 p.m.) at East Lincoln.

Fred T. Foard 3, St. Stephens 1

The Tigers rallied after the host Indians won the first set 26-24, winning with wins of 25-14, 25-18, 25-13 in a non-league battle.

Rachel Merril had six blocks and nine kills for St. Stephens, Kenley Killian added 13 assists and Grace Brennan had 11 assists and two digs.

Neila King led the Indians in digs with 43 and Ally Day had 41 while Carter Leatherman provided 12 kills.

Foard plays a Northwestern Foothills 2A match at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

St. Stephens faces West Caldwell at St. Stephens on Monday at 6 p.m. in a Northwestern 3A-4A match.

Community School of Davidson 3,

Lake Norman Charter 0 (Wednesday)

Community School of Davidson won 25-17, 25-11, 25-18 over visiting Lake Norman Charter, dropping the Knights to 7-3 overall.

Taylor Adelman led Lake Norman Charter with six kills and 11 digs and Liberty Harris added three kills and 15 digs.

Also for Lake Norman Charter, Pearce Augier contributed two kills, a block and four digs, Makayla Martin had two kills, four digs and five assists and Hope Curtis provided an ace and 30 digs.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

St. Stephens 48, Fred T. Foard 0 (Wednesday)

Sophomore Omar Orozco had two interceptions, returning one for a score, as St. Stephens High rolled past visiting Fred T. Foard 48-0 in junior varsity football.

The Indians (3-0) also had seven tackles from sophomore Nick Apollonio in a non-conference victory.

Tailback Zac McLauchlin had TD runs of 43 and 56 yards for St. Stephens and the Indians also got rushing TDs by Appolonio (44 yards), Alex Brown (1 yard) and Tony Rangel (46 yards).

Quarterback Gavin Marley hit Troy Hicks for a 42-yard TD pass for St. Stephens, which has outscored opponents 100-37.

St. Stephens starts Northwestern 3A-4A play on Thursday with a game at Freedom (6:30 p.m.).

Fred T. Foard (0-4), outscored 178-0 in those four games, starts is Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule on Thursday (6:30 p.m.) by visiting Patton.

BOYS SOCCER

Hickory 2, Freedom 1

Brayden Rowland and Jaryd Stillwell scored goals as the Red Tornadoes nipped the Patriots on the road in a Northwestern 3A-4A match on Thursday night.

Alex Rojo had an assist on Rowland’s goal as Hickory improved to 5-`-4 and 2-0-0 in the conference.

East Lincoln 4, Lincolnton 4 (4-3 PKs, Wednesday)

The Mustangs prevailed 4-3 in penalty kicks to win at Lincolnton for the first time in school history.

Chase Gilley had three goals and Logan Gilley scored twice and had an assist for East Lincoln (-1, 2-0 South Fork 2A).

Matt Kosmala had two key saves in goal for the Mustangs, who got assists by Chase Lynch and Pearson Cunningham.

East Lincoln plays a league match Monday at 6:30 p.m. at North Lincoln.

Lincolnton plays at Bandys on Monday in a conference match.

GIRLS GOLF

Northwestern 3A-4A change

The Northwestern 3A-4A match originally scheduled for Tuesday at Catawba Springs will be delayed until Wednesday.

The match will begin at 3:30 p.m.
