HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Maiden captures South Fork 2A volleyball tourney title

Maiden High grabbed another volleyball championship trophy on Thursday night, winning a South Fork 2A tournament title with a 3-1 victory over East Lincoln.

Playing at Lincolnton, the second-seeded Blue Devils won 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22 over the top-seeded Mustangs.

East Lincoln (20-2) had finished one match up on Maiden (19-5), for the second straight season, in the chase for a South Fork 2A regular-season crown.

Abbey Smith had 18 kills and 18 digs in the tournament title match with Sarah Wicker adding 13 kills and six blocks, Isabella Abernathy 12 kills and Abby Driscoll another seven kills.

Also for Maiden, Faith Herman had 50 assists and 18 digs, Peyton McRee made eight digs and Lauren finished with 23 digs.

Maiden and East Lincoln will await the pairings for the state 2A tournament and first-round pairings.

Maiden, coached by Marsha Davis, is riding a nine-match win streak while East Lincoln’s loss on Wednesday snapped a fourth-match win streak.

In the regular season, East Lincoln beat Maiden 3-1 at East Lincoln and Maiden won 3-2 at Maiden.

The All-South Fork 2A team was announced at the tournament with Hailey Buchanan of East Lincoln named the league’s player of the year and the Mustangs’ Stacy Possert selected as the league’s coach of the year (see below).

Maiden 3, North Lincoln 1 (Wednesday)

The Blue Devils nipped the third-seeded Knights in a semifinal of the South Fork 2A tournament at Lincolnton, winning 28-30, 27-25, 25-15, 26-24.

Smith sparked Maiden with 17 kills and 20 dogs, Wicker had 15 kills and five blocks and McRee had 18 digs.

Also for Maiden, Herman finished with 53 assists and 18 digs and Xayavong had 41 digs.

Fred T. Foard 3, West Iredell 1 (Wednesday)

The top-seeded Tigers won a Northwestern Foothill 2A tournament title, downing the second-seeded and visiting Warriors 25-9, 12-25, 25-19, 25-19.

Foard (21-2) beat West Iredell (14-12) for the third time this season.

The Tigers won the conference regular-season title, going 12-0 in league play.

Foard and West Iredell advance to the state 2A tournament, which has not yet been bracketed by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

Alexander Central 50, St. Stephens 14

Daniel Morgan ran four times for 143 yards and two scores and Daynete Calhoun added 111 yards on seven carries and a TDs as the Cougars crushed the Indians on Thursday night in Taylorsville.

Alexander Central (6-0, 3-0) shares the conference lead with South Caldwell and the Indians dropped to 5-2 1-2.

The Cougars rushed 28 times for 326 yards and had 421 yards on offense to the Indians’ 238 that included 100 rushing yards on 27 plays.

St. Stephens quarterback Gavin Marley completed 10 of 17 passes for 138 yards, hitting Zane McPherson five times for 75 yards and a TD and Charlie Woy also had a TD reception.

Lance Justice, the Cougars’ quarterback, threw for 95 yards and two scores.

Morgan’s TD runs were 62 and 57 yards and he caught a 77-yard TD pass that helped the Cougars lead 24-0 early in the second quarter.

Calhoun ran 29 yards for a TD and caught an 18-yard scoring pass while Cameron Lackey added a 2-yard TD run and returned a kickoff 89 yards for a TD.

Alexander Central has three games left, at Hickory on Thursday, at South Caldwell on Nov. 1 and McDowell in Taylorsville on Nov. 5.

St. Stephens’ remaining games are at home against South Caldwell on Thursday and at home against Hickory on Nov. 1.

BOYS SOCCER

Hickory 4, South Caldwell 1 (Wednesday)

Brayden Rowland had a goal and two assists, leading visiting Hickory to a Northwestern 3A-4A victory.

Ben Boston, Aydan Kelly and Hector Diaz each scored a goal for the Red Tornadoes, and Jim Dreno and Kelly each added an assist.

Hickory improved to 13-3-4 overall and 10-2-0 in the conference.

East Lincoln 8, Maiden 2 (Wednesday)

Led by Miller Towson’s three goals and two goals and four assists by Chase Gilley, the Mustangs won a South Fork 2A match at Maiden.

Pearson Cunningham added two goals, Luke Felts scored a goal and Ty Knight had two assists

and Noah Graden and Brandon Spann each had one for East Lincoln.

CROSS COUNTRY

North Lincoln wins both

South Fork 2A titles (Tuesday)

North Lincoln swept South Fork 2A team titles on Tuesday at Southside Park in Newton.

The Knights’ boys had 20 points with Lake Norman Charter next with 50 points while the Knights’ girls had 35 points with Lake Norman Charter next with 38.

Jason Thomson of North Lincoln won the boys’ individual title in 16:17.11, finishing ahead of Lincolnton’s Daniel Hopkins (16:22.13).

Alyssa Galvin and Angie Allen of North Lincoln finished 1-2 in the girls’ race, in 19:04.56 and 19:10.25, respectively.

Watauga sweeps Northwestern 3A-4A

Watauga swept the Northwestern 3A-4A girls’ and boys’ title on Wednesday in Boone.

The Pioneers’ boys has six in the top 10 of an event won by Alexander Central’s Cooper Castellaw in 17:30, with Avery Cannon (17:06) providing Watauga’s top finish in second place.

GIRLS GOLF

Hickory’s McDonald makes state 3A field

Hickory’s Anna McDonald had a round of 77 at the West 3A Regional on Tuesday at the Monroe Country Club.

Other scores by golfers from the Northwestern 3A-4A were: Christina Fisher of Freedom (83), Albany Bock of Freedom (85), and Jasmine Dessert of Alexander Central (116).

Cox Mill won the team title at 238, followed by Marvin Ridge (243) and Weddington (245).

The two-round state 3A tournament is Monday and Tuesday at the Longleaf Golf and Family Club in Spruce Pines.

McDowell finishes tied for 10th at West 4A

In the West 4A regional on Tuesday at the Mooresville Golf Club, McDowell golfers’ scores were: Tyler Price (90), McKenzie Hartman (96), Kendall Brooks (104), Ansley Lance (110) and Andrea Abernathy (111).

The Titans tied West Forsyth for 10th place at 290 and did not advance a golfer to the state 4A championship rounds.

Sasha Hayes of Winston-Salem Reagan (65) won the individual title as Reagan shot 225 to beat Ardrey Kell by 20 strokes and Davie County by 36.
