HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Hickory’s Stober will play baseball for Lenoir-Rhyne

Hickory High catcher Bryce Stober says he will continue his baseball career by playing for Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Stober, currently the starting quarterback for the Red Tornadoes’ varsity football team, posted his decision on Facebook earlier this week.

He also plays for Hickory Post 48 in American Legion baseball.

GIRLS GOLF

Lake Norman Charter wins

Lake Norman Charter won a South Fork 2A match at Deer Brook Golf Course, edging Maiden by one stroke.

Kayal Yang of Maiden was medalist with a 35.

Georgia Chapman shot 44, Josie Fisher had a 47 and Tess Palmer carded a 56 for Lake Norman Charter.

Titans win at Brushy Mountain (Tuesday)

McDowell — led by a round of 39 by Tyler Price — edged Freedom by eight strokes to win the second Northwestern 3A-4A match of the season.

Anna McDonald of Hickory was medalist with a round of 37. She also was medalist in the league’s opening match of the season.

Maiden 3, Lake Norman Charter 1 (Tuesday)

Faith Herman’s 28 assists and 20 digs sparked the Blue Devils to a 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 road victory in the South Fork 2A.

Abbey Smith had 11 kills and Sarah Wicker added seven for Maiden while Peyton McRee provided three aces and Lauren Xayavong had 25 digs and two aces.

Maiden plays a league match at home on Thursday at 6 p.m. against North Lincoln while Lake Norman Charter faces Newton-Conover in a conference match on the road on Thursday at 6 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Central Cabarrus 3, East Lincoln 1 (Tuesday)

The Vikings handed the host Mustangs their first loss of the season.

Chase Gilley scored for East Lincoln and Ty Knight had an assist.

The Mustangs (6-1) play Cramer at East Lincoln on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Hickory 1, Statesville 1 (Tuesday)

Hector Diaz scored for Hickory on an assist by Ben Boston as the Red Tornadoes (2-1-4) tied the Greyounds at Hickory.

Jamie Woodard scored for Statesville.

The Red Tornaodes travel to North Gaston for a Thursday match at 6 p.m.

Hickory’s junior varsity (5-0) beat Statesville 4-1.
