HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Hickory trips Statesville in volleyball, evens record

Allison Gambill had 11 kills and eight digs on Wednesday night as Hickory High evened its girls’ volleyball record by beating visiting Statesville.

The Red Tornadoes won 25-20, 25-14, 25-16, and they are 3-3 overall heading into a Northwestern 3A-4A home match on Thursday night at 6 p.m. against West Caldwell.

Morgan Anderson had three aces and 18 assists for Hickory in its win while Julie Huggins provided eight kills and Haley Helton made eight digs.

Payton Cross added seven kills and Oliva Pisel contributed 12 assists for the Red Tornadoes.

West Iredell 3, Patton 0

The Warriors won 25-11, 25-4, 25-5 to pull even with Fred T. Foard for the early lead in the Northwestern Foothills 2A.

West Iredell and Foard share first place with 3-0 conference records.

Aleia Rose had 12 digs and Caroline Byrd had three kills in the loss for Patton, now 0-4 in league play.

The Warriors have a non-conference home match on Thursday at 6 p.m. against North Iredell and they’ll face third-place Bunker Hill at West Iredell on Monday night at 6 p.m.

Patton’s next match is a non-conference contest on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Avery County.

Lake Norman Charter 3, Newton-Conover 1

The Knights and Red Devils played a day earlier than originally planned with Lake Norman Charter winning 25-12, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20 at Lake Norman Charter.

The victory was the first in the South Fork 2A for the Knights, 1-3 in the league, and the Red Devils are also 1-3.

Lake Norman Charter is at home on Thursday for a non-league match against Bunker Hill.

Newton-Conover’s next match is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at home against North Lincoln.

Bunker Hill 3, East Burke 0

The Bears improved to 3-1 in the Northwestern Foothills 2A by winning 27-25, 25-16, 25-20 over the Cavs in Claremont.

Bunker Hill plays at Lake Norman Charter on Thursday.

The Cavs’ next match is Saturday at noon against South Iredell at St. Stephens.

Draughn 3, Hibriten 0

At Hibriten, the Wildcats won 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 in a Northwestern Foothills 2A match.

Draughn is 2-2 in the league and in fourth place while Hibriten dropped to 0-3 in the conference.

Draughn plays Fred T. Foard on Monday at 6 p.m. at Draughn while Hibriten has a league match on Monday, also at 6 p.m., at East Burke.

Carson 3, East Lincoln 1

Visiting Carson beat the Mustangs 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18 in a non-conference match.

East Lincoln, 3-0 and sharing first place with Maiden in the South Fork 2A, is at home Thursday night at 6 p.m. against Bandys.

BOYS SOCCER

Watauga 2, Avery County 0

The Pioneers scored a shutout win at home, improving to 5-2-0 overall.

Postponements

Draughn’s match at West Lincoln was postponed by rain and will be rescheduled, and the East Burke at West Caldwell non-conference match will be played Thursday at 5 p.m.
