HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Hickory nips St. Stephens, still in first in Northwestern 3A-4A boys soccer

Newton-Conover golfer scores ace in South Fork 2A girls’ match

Hickory High’s boys remained atop the Northwestern 3A-4A soccer standings on Monday night by collecting a home victory over archrival St. Stephens 4-2 in a shootout.

Conner Stewart, Harrison Boston, Jaryd Stillwell and Hector Diaz had shootout goals after the Red Tornadoes (9-2-4, 6-1) and the Indians were tied at 1.

Stillwell had Hickory’s goal in regulation on an assist from Jim Drewno.

Hickory moved 1 ½ games ahead of South Caldwell and Watauga (both 4-2-0), who share second place.

St. Stephens, 1-4-0 in the league, is in seventh place.

Hickory’s junior varsity stayed unbeaten (13-0-0) by beating the Indians 5-0.

The Indians have a conference match at South Caldwell on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. while Hickory’s next match is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at McDowell.

St. Stephens travels to Freedom for a conference match on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Newton-Conover 4, East Lincoln 3, OT

The Red Devils’ victory on the road created a tie for first place in the South Fork 2A.

Chase Gilley had three goals and Logan Gilley had an assist for the Mustangs.

Newton-Conover — the defending league and state 2A champion — improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1-0 in the conference with its sixth straight victory.

East Lincoln (13-2, 6-1-0) had won seven straight since a loss to Central Cabarrus.

Newton-Conover faces Lincolnton in Newton on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. while the Mustangs are at home, also at 6 p.m., to battle Lake Norman Charter.

Bandys 1, North Lincoln 0, OT

Ben Joseph scored the only goal as the Trojans won a South Fork 2A match on the road to hold third place in the conference.

Bandys is 5-2-0 in the league and trails only East Lincoln and Newton-Conover, each 6-1-0.

The Trojans face Maiden in a conference match at Maiden at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and the Knights (2-4-0) play at 6 p.m. at West Lincoln.

Tigers cancel match

Fred T. Foard High announced it will cancel a non-conference match scheduled Thursday at Forestview.

VOLLEYBALL

East Burke 3, Bunker Hill 2

The Cavs won a fifth and deciding set over the host Bears 15-5 to wrap up a Northwestern Foothills 2A victory.

Bunker Hill won 25-23 in the opening set before the Cavs won 25-21, 27-25. The Bears won the fourth set 25-21.

Allison Fair had two aces and 26 assists, Payton Bryant had 22 digs and 12 kills and Crystany White provided 19 digs for Bunker Hill.

The win lifted East Burke to 6-3 in the league, leaving the Cavs behind Fred T. Foard (9-0, idle on Monday) and West Iredell (7-1 heading into Monday’s match at Patton).

East Burke plays at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Hibriten while the Bears go to West Iredell, also at 6 p.m., for a league match.

Hickory 3, St. Stephens 0

The Red Tornadoes won 25-1, 25-16, 25-12 at home in a Northwestern 3A-4A match on Monday, staying on the heels of league-leading Watauga by winning.

Hickory is 10-1 in the conference standings, a game back of Watauga (11-0), which won 3-0 at West Caldwell on Monday.

The Red Tornadoes’ lead over third-place Alexander Central (7-4) is three games with three matches left on the conference schedule.

Hickory goes to McDowell on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for a league match while St. Stephens will be on the road, at Freedom, for a 6 p.m. start.

If Hickory and Watauga each continue to win, their match on Oct. 10 in Boone would decide the conference regular-season championship.

GIRLS GOLF

Lake Norman Charter wins

Lake Norman Charter won a South Fork 2A match at Lincoln Country Club on Monday, edging Maiden by five strokes.

The Knights closed at 149, followed by Maiden’s 154 with West Lincoln (164) finishing third.

Josie Fisher’s 42, her best round to date, led Lake Norman Charter.

Camryn Lamp of Newton-Conover was the medalist at 38 and her round included a hole-in-one on No. 4.
