Fred T. Foard High goes for a third straight trip to the state 2A volleyball quarterfinals on Thursday night at home.

The top-seeded Tigers (28-1) battle No. 8 R-S Central (19-8) in a Sweet 16 match at home with a 6 p.m. start at Copas Gym.

The winner advances to play No. 5 South Rowan (27-1) or No. 20 West Stokes (24-5) in the fourth round.

Foard reached the third round with a 3-0 home win over No. 17 East Lincoln, winning 25-11, 25-11, 25-13 with Michelle Tao and Dara Shaffer leading the way.

The other two teams still alive from Greater Hickory area conferences – Patton from, like Foard, the Northwestern Foothills 2A, and Northwestern 3A-4A champion Watauga – are also home on Thursday night.

Patton (22-6), a No. 11 seed, meets No. 14 Surry Central (20-7) with the winner advancing to meet No. 7 Forbush (19-9) or No. 2 Brevard (24-5).

In the second round, Patton outlasted No. 6 West Stanly on the road 3-2. The Panthers rallied after falling 25-20, 25-19 in the first two sets and then won 26-24, 25-19, 15-13 to advance.

Watauga (25-0), a No. 4 seed in 3A, meets No. 5 Cox Mill (26-2) in Boone at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The winner gets No. 9 Asheville Roberson (24-3) or No. 1 West Rowan (26-0) next.

Watauga, playing at home, downed No. 13 Concord Robinson 3-0 in the second round (25-5, 25-8, 25-8).

West Stokes 3, Maiden 0

Fourth-seeded Maiden (23-5), the South Fork 2A regular season and tournament winner, was eliminated in the second round on Tuesday night, falling 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 to No. 20 West Stokes at Maiden.

Abbey Smith had 12 kills and 10 digs to lead the Blue Devils. Sarah Wicker added eight kills and two blocks, Adison Ford had 24 assists and Natalie Lail provided 11 digs.

Southwest Randolph 3, Hickory 0

The sixth-seeded Cougars (25-2) eliminated No. 11 Hickory (16-6) in the second round on Tuesday at Southwest Randolph.

Southwest Randolph won 25-10, 25-15, 25-22.

Payton Shiflet led the Cougars with 16 kills and 10 digs and Ashton Maness had 11 kills and 13 digs.

Peyton Leroy had 30 assists and 14 digs and Anna Kate Schiebel made five blocks for Southwest Randolph.

Bandys’ battle with Lake Norman Charter now Thursday

The Lake Norman Charter at Bandys junior varsity football game moved up to Wednesday night was not played due to rain.

The game is at 7 p.m. on Thursday with Bandys – 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the league — needing a victory to wrap up at least a share of the South Fork 2A title.

Bandys shares the league lead with North Lincoln, which is scheduled to play Lincolnton on the road Thursday night.

Lincolnton forfeited to Lake Norman Charter last Thursday.

Bandys and North Lincoln play next Thursday at North Lincoln to close the season.

East Lincoln’s boys finished unbeaten in the South Fork 2A and overall in the regular season and will be a high seed in next week’s state 2A playoffs./EAST LINCOLN HIGH PHOTO

East Lincoln 2, Newton-Conover 1, OT

The Mustangs completed an unbeaten South Fork 2A schedule and regular season by nipping the visiting Red Devils on Tuesday night.

East Lincoln (22-0, 14-0) got a goal by Logan Gilley with 59 seconds left in overtime via an assist by Chase Gilley to win.

Chase Gilley scored late in regulation for East Lincoln, which won a league title for the first time since 2011.

The Mustangs and Red Devils will advance to the state 2A tournament next week.

Red Devils’ Lamp ties for third in state

Newton-Conover’s Camryn Lamp tied for third in the state 1A/2A girls’ golf championship tournament, which ended Tuesday at the Longleaf Golf and Family Club in Southern Pines.

Lamp shot a second-round 76 after an opening day 79 to close at 155 (11-over par) and share third with Maci Beaver of Roanoke Rapids.

Katherine Schuster of First Flight (74-71—145) won the individual title by eight strokes over Kately Griggs of Gray Stone Day.

Oak Grove (512) won the state team title, edging Mount Pleasant (531) with West Lincoln (583) finishing sixth.

Other area scorers were: Georgia Chapman of Lake Norman Charter (172, 20th); Sophia Laliberte of East Lincoln (182, tie 31st); Tess Palmer of Lake Norman Charter (185, tie 36th); Reese Coltrane of West Lincoln (189, tie 40th); Sondra Uon of Newton-Conover (190, tie 42nd); Laycee Hoffman of West Lincoln (190, tie 42nd); Rae Watson of West Lincoln (204, 59th); Angela Jeffords of Lincoln Charter (212, 66th).

Patriots’ Bock finishes 10th in state 3A

Freedom had two golfers finish in the top 30 at the state 3A tournament that ended on Tuesday at the Foxfire Resort in Jackson Springs.

Albany Bock shot an 80 in the second round and finished at 159 to take 10th for the Patriots.

Christina Fisher finished at 84-81—175 and tied two golfers for 26th.

Elizabeth Lohbauer of Cox Mill won the individual title (173), edging Emily Mathews of Eastern Alamance by four strokes.

Cox Mill shot 467 to win the team title with Rockingham County (481) in second.

Freedom sweeps Northwestern 3A-4A awards

Freedom swept the Northwestern 3A-4A’s girls’ golf awards in voting by conference head coaches.

Christina Fisher was named the league’s top player and her coach, Rob Scott, won Coach of the Year after the Patriots won the conference championship.

Freedom shot 909 with McDowell second at 971.

She won the individual championship by 22 strokes and Patton edged Hibriten by one stroke for the team championship.

Draughn’s Chris Treadway, whose team finished third, won Coach of the Year.

Foard sweeps Northwestern Foothills 2A awards

Fred T. Foard High won the girls’ tennis title in the Northwestern Foothills 2A and swept league awards with Alexis Woglemuth named Player of the Year and head coach Shawn Miller receiving Coach of the Year.

Woglemuth led five all-league selections for the Tigers. She and Hannah Cummings won the state 2A doubles championship.
