HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Cougars edge Indians, start league volleyball at 2-0

Alexander Central High won its second conference volleyball match of the season on Wednesday night, edging visiting St. Stephens 3-1.

The Cougars won 25-20 and 25-17 in the first two sets before the Indians won 25-14 to force a fourth set, won 25-20 by the Cougars.

St. Stephens dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the league after falling 3-1 on Monday at home to Watauga in a Northwestern 3A-4A opener.

Kenley Killian led the Indians with 19 assists and three aces while Neila King contributed 16 kills and three blocks and Carter Leatherman added 14 kills and four blocks.

Alexander Central plays at home Thursday night at 6 p.m. in a non-league match against Fred T. Foard.

St. Stephens will be at home for its next match at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against league rival South Caldwell.

South Iredell 3, Maiden 2

The Vikings won at Maiden in five sets.

Maiden was up two sets to one after falling 25-17 in the first one and rallying for 26-24 and 25-19 wins.

South Iredell evened it by winning 25-21 and won the deciding set 15-9.

Abbey Smith had 15 kills and Nicole Hutchinson had 10 for the Blue Devils while Faith Herman provided 33 assists and Lauren Xayavong had 23 digs.

Maiden has a South Fork 2A match on Thursday at home, facing West Lincoln at 6 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Bunker Hill 3, East Wilkes 0

The Bears evened their record at 2-2 with a home victory.

Ethan Vang had one goal and an assist for Bunker Hill while Logan Yang and Daniel Navarro each added a goal.

The Bears face Challenger on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Bunker Hill.

Newton-Conover 1, Hickory 0

The Red Devils scored the only goal of the non-conference match in the opening half as they improved to 5-1 with their third straight victory.

Newton-Conover plays at home Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference match against Fred T. Foard and goes to Patton next Thursday before beginning defense of its South Fork 2A title with a match at Lincolnton on Sept. 10.

Hickory (2-1-3) plays Statesville in Hickory on Tuesday at 6 p.m., goes to North Gaston next Thursday and opens Northwestern 3A-4A play on Sept. 10 at home against McDowell.

GIRLS GOLF

Northwestern 3A-4A scores adjusted

The conference adjusted scoring totals for a South Caldwell girls’ golf from Tuesday’s Northwestern 3A-4A match at the Boone Golf Club.

Hannah Bumgarner of the Spartans was recorded with a round of 59 but actually shot 49.

South Caldwell shot 171 and finished behind McDowell, Freedom and Hickory with Alexander Central (172) dropping to fifth after the scores were recalculated.

The second league match of the season is Tuesday at Brushy Mountain at 3:30 p.m.
