HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Alex Central JVs roll, run win streak to 23 in a row

Alexander Central High had three players gain an average of 11 yards on 25 combined rushes on Thursday night, rolling past Wilkes Central 36-12 on the road to extend its junior varsity football win streak to 23 games.

Dayente Calhoun carried 12 times for 99 yards and two scores, Daniel Morgan ran for 89 yards on five carries and Lance Justice added 87 yards on eight carries for the Cougars, who outgained the Eagles 298-106 on the ground.

Ahmad Carlton led Wilkes Central (0-1) with 77 yards on 21 carries.

The Cougars (1-0) led 22-0 in the second quarter and 30-6 by halftime.

Calhoun’s 2-yard TD run about five minutes into the game gave Alexander Central a lead, and Cameron Lackey’s 8-yard rushing TD made it 14-0.

Justice ran 10 yards for a TD with eight minutes, 36 seconds left in the opening half and Calhoun’s two-point conversion run made it 22-0

Justice added a 24-yard TD run and Lackey ran for two points about four minutes before halftime, making it 36-6.

Calhoun scored the Cougars’ only second-half points on an 11-yard run with 2:28 left in the third quarter.

The only final quarter scoring came on an 18-yard run by Wilkes Central’s Devin Turner.

Wilkes Central had the ball for nearly 24 of the game’s 40 minutes but was forced into four turnovers by Alexander Central’s defense.

Ethan Robinette led the Cougars with six tackles (one for lost yardage), Lackey had five hits (three for negative yards) and Peyton Payne and Josh Abernathy each made four tackles and one stop each for negative yards.

Kobe Caesar led Wilkes Central with six tackles.

Alexander Central, which plays at North Iredell on Aug. 30, started its current win streak after a 21-14 home loss in Oct. 2015 to Lake Norman while playing in the North Piedmont 3A-4A.

The Cougars closed the 2015 season in the North Piedmont 3A-4A by beating Statesville and West Iredell then had back-to-back 10-0 seasons.

VOLLEYBALL

Maiden 3, Lincoln Charter 0

Faith Herman had 33 assists as the Blue Devils won a non-league match 25-21, 25-10, 25-20 on the road.

Abbey Smith provided 14 kills and 12 digs, Sarah Wicker had eight kills and three blocks for Maiden.

Nicole Hutchinson added six kills, Lauren Xayavong had 19 digs and Peyton McRee contributed two aces for the Blue Devils.

Maiden opens South Fork 2A play on Tuesday, facing Bandys at Maiden at 6 p.m.

St. Stephens 3, Draughn 0

Rachel Merrill, Carter Leatherman, Neila King and Ally Day sparked the Indians as they won a non-league match at home over Draughn.

St. Stephens won 25-9, 25-15, 25-12.

The Indians open Northwestern 3A-4A play on Monday at home, facing Watauga at 6 p.m.

Draughn opens its Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule on Monday night at 6 p.m. at West Iredell.

Lake Norman Charter 3, Christ The King 0

Pearce Augier had six kills, four blocks, three digs and three aces, helping the Knights win 25-16, 25-2, 25-20 on the road and stay undefeated (4-0).

Liberty Harris provided 12 kills and eight digs, Taylor Adleman had 17 digs and three kills, Hope Curtis finished with 21 digs and two aces while Lauren Lepper contributed 12 assists, four aces, one kill and six digs for Lake Norman Charter.

The Knights play their South Fork 2A opener on Tuesday, going to East Lincoln for a 6 p.m. match.
