HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Alex Central JVs roll again, remain undefeated

Dayente Calhoun scored on three of his 11 rushes and gained 118 yards on Thursday night, leading Alexander Central High to a 52-16 junior varsity football victory over visiting West Caldwell.

The Cougars opened their Northwestern 3A-4A schedule by rushing for 297 yards on 27 carries and they held visiting Warriors to 151 yards of offense.

Calhoun had the first score for Alexander Central, a 1-yard run with six minutes, 49 seconds left in the first quarter and added TD runs of 5 and 9 yards in the second and fourth quarters, respectively.

All of the other TDs for the Cougars were via the ground game. Daniel Morgan ran for two and Colston Yount, JaiKwaun Tilley each added a rushing TD.

George Sriven ran 16 times for 96 yards and a TD and Fazion Dickson added 13 carries for 83 yards and a TD for the Warriors.

Tilley led the Cougars’ defense with seven tackles, Ethan Robinette had six and Yount and Zach Hatton each added five.

David Urbina’s seven tackles led West Caldwell defensively, and Nick Perkins had five tackles.

Alexander Central (2-0, 1-0) plays next Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at league rival Watauga.

West Caldwell (0-3, 0-1) is at home next Thursday night, also at 6:30 p.m., for a league game with South Caldwell.

St. Stephens 22, Freedom 14

Freshman running back Zach McLauchlin ran for 98 yards on 20 carries and scored three times to lead the Indians past visiting Freedom in a Northwestern 3A-4A game.

Sophomore quarterback Malik Hilton had nine carries for 81 rushing yards for St. Stephens (3-1, 1-0).

Sophomore safety Garrett Bolling led the Indians’ defense with five tackles, sophomore linebacker Matthew Hancock added four tackles and three assists and freshman linebacker Sullivan Johnson had an interception.

St. Stephens plays a league game next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at McDowell.

Freedom (3-1, 0-1) is at home next Thursday (6:30 p.m.) against Hickory.

VOLLEYBALL

Maiden 3, Bandys 0

The Blue Devils won a South Fork 2A match on the road 25-13, 25-10, 25-20.

Kyle Morgan had 19 kills, Abbey Smith added six kills and two aces and Faith Herman contributed 34 assists for Maiden.

Lauren Xayavong and Evan Sherrill posted seven digs each for Maiden, which next plays on Tuesday at home at 6 p.m. against West Lincoln.

Bandys plays a conference match Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Newton-Conover.

St. Stephens 3, Freedom 0

The Indians won their 11th match of the season and improved to 5-4 in the Northwestern 3A-4A with a sweep of the Patriots, 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 at St. Stephens.

Leading St. Stephens were Sam Wilson with 16 assists, Rachel Merrill with seven kills and Hannah McElroy and Lauren Gantt with six each, and Patti Jo Gotshall with 10 digs.

St. Stephens faces McDowell in Marion at 6 p.m, on Tuesday in league play while Freedom is at home on Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m., against Hickory.

Hickory 3, McDowell 0

At Hickory, the Red Tornadoes won a Northwestern 3A-4A match 25-20, 25-14, 25-22 behind Payton Cross with 13 kills and Julie Huggins with seven.

Hickory goes to Freedom on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. for a conference match, and the Titans are at home, at 6 p.m., against St. Stephens.

GIRLS GOLF

Hickory wins again

Hickory High’s girls won the second Northwestern 3A-4A match of the season at the Boone Golf Club as Anna McDonald was medalist with a nine-hole round of 37.

The Red Tornadoes shot 137, edging McDowell by nine strokes and Freedom by 14.

Tyler Price’s 41 led McDowell and Christina Fisher’ 44 paced Freedom.

Jackie Little (49) had the best round for fourth-place Alexander Central and Abby Gray’s 51 topped fifth-place South Caldwell.

Watauga was sixth, led by a 61 by Alice Knight, and St. Stephens was last with Cate Cook’s 56 the top score for the Indians.
