HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Foard, W. Caldwell win in conference golf

Fred T. Foard High — led by a medalist round of 78 by Jordan Sain and a 79 by Max Cranford — won a Northwestern Foothills 2A boys’ golf match on Monday at the Catawba Country Club.

The Tigers shot 338, finishing 10 strokes better than Draughn, and Foard pulled within one stroke of Draughn (694-693) after two conference matches this season.

Carson Witherspoon of Patton, which finished third on Monday, has the only other sub-80 score with a 79.

Dillon Robinson’s 80 led Draughn.

The next Northwestern Foothills 2A match is Monday at Cedar Rock in Lenoir.

Warriors win at Orchard Hills

West Caldwell shot a 325, nipping Alexander Central by three strokes, and Freedom’s Jared Clontz was medalist with a 74 in a Northwestern 3A-4A golf match at Orchard Hills.

Matthew Gurnsey’s 76 led West Caldwell and Cole Carrigan’s 80 paced Alexander Central.

Eli Wyatt of Hickory was one stroke behind Clontz.

The next Northwestern 3A-4A match is Monday at 3 p.m. at the Lenoir Golf Course.

BASEBALL

Lake Norman Charter 5, Covenant Day 0

Sophomore Peter Alperi had three hits and drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher as the Knights (4-1) won on the road.

Lake Norman Charter scored four runs in the first inning and ended up with seven hits.

Alperi threw four innings, allowing three hits and he struck out three.

Lake Norman Charter has a South Fork 2A game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against East Lincoln at the Huntersville Athletic Park.

North Gaston 13, Lincolnton 0, 5 inn.

The unbeaten Wildcats (4-0) scored 11 runs in the third inning and won by limiting the visiting Wolves (0-3) to two hits.

Braxon Eley and Gavin Jiminez had hits for Lincolnton.

Eley was the losing pitcher, giving up seven hits, eight runs (all earned) with two walks and two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

Lincolnton plays a South Fork 2A game at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Newton-Conover.

Hickory 15, Statesville 1

The Red Tornadoes improved to 3-2 with a five-inning win on the road.

No other game details were available.

Hickory plays a Northwestern 3A-4A game at home on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against South Caldwell.

SOFTBALL

East Burke 11, Freedom 3

The Cavs remained unbeaten (3-0) with a non-league road victory sparked by Lexi Seagle, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts and one walk.

Allie Cook had two hits and drove in three runs for East Burke.

The Cavs have a non-conference road game on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Burns.

Freedom is at home at 5 p.m. on Tuesday to play a Northwestern 3A-4A game against St. Stephens.

Forbush 6, South Caldwell 1

The Falcons stayed unbeaten (4-0) with a six-run fifth inning and by holding the Spartans (3-1) to four hits.

Jenna Pittman took the loss for the Spartans, going four innings. She gave up five hits, six runs (all earned) with three walks and three strikeouts.

South Caldwell plays at Hickory at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in a Northwestern 3A-4A game.

Hickory 17, Statesville 13, 8 inn.

The Red Tornadoes open a six-run lead early and rallied after trailing 11-9, eventually winning a non-league road game by scoring six runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Hickory (2-3) was up 6-0 after scoring twice in each of the first three innings.

Statesville (0-3) scored nine runs in the fifth inning to go up 11-9.

The Red Tornadoes are at home on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to battle South Caldwell in a Northwestern 3A-4A game.

Watauga 4, Ashe County 0

Sam Reece, Jada Wilson and Marlie Stilwell each drove in a run for the Pioneers in a non-conference road win.

Watauga (2-2) won with just four hits and scored three runs in the first inning.

Wilson held Ashe County (1-2) to three hits, walking one and striking out 13.

The Pioneers have a Northwestern 3A-4A game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Boone, facing McDowell.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hickory 9, S. Caldwell 0

Izzi Wood scored five goals and Jess LaFrancis and Nia Linebarger each had two assists as the Red Tornadoes rolled to a Northwestern 3A-4A home win in a match moved up by one day.

Ayden Vaughan, Lauren Hayes, Madeline Pitts and Madeline Mosteller each added a goal for Hickory, and Vaughan, Blair McIntosh and Elizabeth Betancourt each had an assist.

In goal, Sarah Harding posted her fourth shutout of the season for the Red Tornadoes (5-0-1, 1-0).

Hickory’s junior varsity beat South Caldwell 8-0.

Over the weekend, the Red Tornadoes nipped Raleigh Enloe 3-0 and tied Raleigh Broughton 2-2 in the Brittany Memorial Showcase in Wilson.

The tie with Broughton was on Friday and Wood scored twice and LaFrancis had an assist.

The win over Enloe was Saturday when Vaughan scored twice and Wood added a goal. LaFrancis contributed three assists and Harding had five saves.

South Caldwell faces Freedom in Hudson on Friday and Hickory is at home on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Watauga.

BOYS LACROSSE

Providence 18, Lake Norman Charter 8

Visiting Providence raced to a 13-5 lead by halftime en route to a non-conference victory.

A.J. Harris led Lake Norman Charter with three goals and Petyon Turner and Reid Mitchell each added two.

Lake Norman Charter plays on Thursday at 7 p.m. at home against Ardrey Kell.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Providence 21, Lake Norman Charter 14

Visiting Providence wiped out a three-goal halftime deficit by scoring 16 times in the second half to win.

Lake Norman Charter (1-2) plays on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Providence Day.
