HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF: Trio from South Fork finish in top 10 in state 2A tourney

Anna McDonald of Hickory takes fourth place in state 3A tournament

PINEHURST –Three South Fork 2A golfers — led by Maiden High’s Kayla Yang in seventh — finished in the top 10 of the state 1A/2A girls’ golf state championships on Tuesday at Foxfire Resort.

Yang shot a round of 81 on Tuesday, finishing at 163 and one stroke ahead of eighth-place Sophie Laliberte of East Lincoln (84-80—164), and Newton-Conover’s Camyrn Lamp broke into the top 10 by shooting 80 on Tuesday to close at 167 and tie for ninth place.

Lake Norman Charter of the South Fork 2A shot 572 to finish four in the teams standings with Hibriten of the Northwestern Foothills 2A (585) taking fifth and Maiden of the South Fork 2A finishing seventh (625).

Katherine Schuser of First Flight was the individual champion at 139, finish four strokes ahead of Forbush’s Mallory Fobes.

Gray Stone Day shot 554, edging Raleigh Charter by 10 strokes for the team title.

Hickory’s McDonald fourth in 3A

Anna McDonald of Hickory, second going into Tuesday’s second round, had a round of 80 to finish at 153 and take fourth in the state 3A tournament at Longleaf Golf Club and Family Center.

She shot an opening round 72.

First-round leader Ana Tsiros of Asheville shot a 74 on Tuesday, edging Kayla Smith of Burlington Williams by four strokes for the individual title.

Rockingham County won the team title at 493, finishing 13 strokes on Cox Mill and Northern Guilford, who shared second place.

Winston-Salem Reagan wins in 4A

Sasha Hayes’ 74-70—144 won the individual title as she led Winston-Salem Reagan to the team title at Pinehurst No. 3.

Hayes finished six up on Mara Hirtle of Pinecrest and seven up on Jaclyn Kenzel of Pinecrest.

Regan closed at 458, six strokes better than Pinecrest.
