HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF REGIONALS: Maiden wins West 1A/2A; Hickory makes state 3A field

Maiden High’s girls golf team is headed to the state 1A/2A championship tournament next week after winning the West regional at Glen Oaks by 27 strokes.

The Blue Devils, led by a round of 84 by Kayla Yang, finished at 289 to edge second-place Highland Tech (316) and third-place Hendersonville (323).

Yang will be joined at Longleaf in Southern Pines on Monday for the start of a two-day tournament by teammates Alex Grant and Sara Howard.

Grant shot a 101 at the West regional and Howard shot a 104.

Other area players qualifying for the 1A/2A tournament (with their regional score) include Molly Messenheimer of Patton (91), Camyrn Lamp of Newton-Conover (96), Morgan Loftin of Fred T. Foard (101), Davis Walker of Hibriten (103), Gracie Church of Hibriten (105), Ellie Chung of East Burke (108) and Newton-Conover’s McKenna Mitchell (109).

Grace Jones of Hayesville shot 74 and won the regional individual title.

West 3A Regional

Hickory’s girls shot 261 at Etowah Valley to finish third behind Cox Mill (261) and Marvin Ridge (279).

Hickory’s Anna McDonald shot an 83, finishing third, and Samantha Harrington finished tied for 13th at 93 while Jordan Carpenter shot a 115 for the Red Tornadoes.

Hickory goes to Foxfire Village for the two-day 3A tournament, which begins Monday.

Also advancing to the state tournament will be Freedom’s Christina Fisher, who shot a 96 at the West regional.

Kasey Owenby of Forestview (79) won the individual title at the regional.

West 4A Regional

Sasha Hayes’ round of 74 at Salem Glenn led Winston-Salem Reagan (237) to the West 4A regional title.

Ardrey Kell (247) and Providence (254) finished second and third, respectively.

Tyler Price of McDowell shot a 97, McKenzie Hunter of McDowell shot a 98 and Abby Gray of South Caldwell shot 101. None of the three advanced to the state tournament.
