HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF: Red Devils capture 1A/2A state championship

Newton-Conover High brought home a state 1A/2A championship on Tuesday at Longleaf, finishing at 104 over par to edge Raleigh Charter by 16 strokes.

Sonda Uon led the Red Devils, closing at 82-92–174 to tie for 13th individually. Teammates Hailey Hicks (90-91–181) and Celeste Little (88-93–181) tied for 18th.

West Lincoln’s Reece Coltrane finished eighth after rounds of 85 and 81 as the Rebels finished fifth in team scoring at 127 over par.

Katelyn Griggs of Gray Stone Day, who shot a 74 in the opening round, shot a 79 to finish at 9-over par 153. She was three strokes in front of Hayesville’s Madison Logan (74-79–156).


Hickory’s Lillian Bowman had a 93 in the second round, finishing at 180, to tie for 15th place at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.

Trinity White of Hibriten finished 18th with a 93-90–185.

Wilson Fike won the team title at 133 over par with Union Pines three strokes back.

The individual champion was Emily Mathews of Eastern Alamance (75-69–144) at even par with Jacksonville’s Sanna Carter next at 78-78–156.


Morgan Ketchum of WinstonSalem Reagan led her team to the team title at Pinehurst No. 5. She went 75-65-140 to close at 4-under par.

Elizabeth Russell of Myers Park (71-73–144) and Macy Pate of Winston-Salem Reagan (75-69–144) were at even par and shared second place.

Winston-Salem Reagan finished 2-over par in the team chase, 15 strokes ahead of Cardinal Gibbons.
