NEWTON – Fred T. Foard High’s girls’ varsity basketball game at home on Friday night will be a Play4Kay game for the Tigers.

School officials have announced the Northwestern Foothills 2A game against Draughn – estimated to tip at about 5:30 p.m. – will help raise funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to extend and improve the lives of all women battling cancer by raising money for research and assisting the underserved. The Fund was founded in 2007 from the vision of the late Kay Yow, former NC State University head women’s basketball coach.

Both teams will wear Play4Kay shirts during warm-ups and additional shirts will be available for purchase. Additionally, cancer patients and survivors will be recognized and honored at halftime of the game.

In 38 years as a college head coach, Yow was one of only six NCAA Division I women’s basketball head coaches to achieve 700 career victories. She guided her squads to 20 of 27 NCAA Tournaments, 11 trips to the Sweet 16 and a trip to the Elite Eight and the Final Four in 1998.

Yow also was part of an elite group of nine Olympic coaches chosen to lead USA Basketball in the pursuit of Olympic gold. Additionally, Yow became only the third women’s basketball coach in NCAA Division I history to coach 1,000 games with one program.

Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She died in 2009, after a 22-year, on-again, off-again battle with the disease.
