Cavs’ Moore has fourth 100-yard game this season in loss

STATESVILLE – West Iredell High opened a three-score lead early – including returning the game’s opening kickoff for a touchdown – en route to a 47-28 victory on Friday night over visiting East Burke.

Caleb Alford returned the first kickoff of the game 78 yards for a TD before Emmanual Long added a 1-yard TD run and Chandon Smith caught a 19-yard scoring pass from Eli Kitchens as the Warriors (4-3, 2-0 Northwestern Foothills 2A) opened a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

East Burke’s Josh Moore, who gained 112 yards on 20 carries for his fourth 100-yard game of the season, ran 23 yards for a TD in the second quarter.

West Iredell answered that when Smith returned a fumble 2 yards for a TD, and Seth Pruitt’s 3-yard TD run for the Cavs (1-5, 0-1) made it 27-14 at the half.

Long had two more scoring runs for West Iredell, a 3-yarder in the third quarter and a 13-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Moore’s 2-yard TD run in the fourth quarter helped East Burke pull within 40-28 before William Barber scored on a 12-yard TD run for the Warriors.

Long had 23 carries for 144 yards and Barber had four carries for 63 yards as West Iredell collected 337 yards rushing on 39 attempts.

Pruitt carried 18 times for 113 yards, a season-high, for East Burke and he threw for another 51 yards.

East Burke played at West Iredell for the first time and was playing in Iredell County for only the fourth time in records dating back to 1980.

Unofficially, Moore has gained 598 yards this season (he ran for 465 yards a year ago).

West Iredell has won back-to-back games as it heads into its bye week. The Warriors face Patton on the road in a league game at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12.

East Burke has not won since beating West Caldwell 42-0 to open the season, and the Cavs will play their homecoming game on Friday at 7:30, facing Patton.
