HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: West Iredell opens league play by beating Draughn

STATESVILLE – Bernie Briley caught two touchdown passes and quarterback Dillan Davis played a role in three scores as West Iredell High tripped visiting Draughn 28-14 on Friday night in Northwestern Foothills 2A football.

The Warriors (3-3, 1-0) broke away from a 7-all halftime tie when Davis threw 45 yards to Briley about two minutes into the second half.

Christian Campbell scored on a 1-yard run about two minutes later for the Wildcats (1-5, 0-1) before West Iredell took the lead for good on a 3-yard TD run by Jercovien Lynch.

Davis’ 93-yard TD run with just more than three minutes to play, was the only score of the final quarter.

The game was scoreless until the second quarter when Campbell scored on a 1-yard run for Draughn.

Davis’ 36-yard scoring pass to Briley, who played his junior season at Bunker Hill, and a PAT tied it at 7.

Davis threw for about 140 yards and ran for 145 on just five carries to spark West Iredell.

West Iredell continues league play next Friday night by going to East Burke for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Draughn is at home next Friday for a conference game, also at 7:30 p.m., against county rival Patton.
