MILLERS CREEK – West Wilkes High held off visiting Bunker Hill on Friday night to earn its first 4-0 football start since 1993.
The Blackhawks topped the Bears 47-43 behind quarterback Alex Ortiz, who had 133 passing yards and ran 19 times for 136 yards.
West Wilkes led 27-21 at the half after each team scored three times in the second quarter.
The Blackhawks got that six-point lead on a pass from Ortiz to Isaac Hamilton.
A 5-yard TD run by Tyler Skeen, who ran for 103 yards, put West Wilkes ahead 35-21.
Cole Smith had four catches for 124 yards for the Blackhawks, whose 4-0 start includes beating Forbush, North Stokes and Bishop McGuiness.
Bunker Hill, now 0-5, got 102 rushing yards and two TDs from Raheem Carson and another 86 rushing yards from Devin Caldwell.
The Bears had not played West Wilkes since a 1980 state playoff game in Millers Creek that the Blackhawks won 16-14.
Bunker Hill opens its Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule next Friday by entertaining undefeated Hibriten at 7:30 p.m.
