HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Tidbits from final SD-7 2A statistics

DENVER, N.C. – Some quick notes of interest while compiling the final (unofficial) football team statistics for the 2016 season in the now-defunct Southern District 7 Athletic 2A:

High-scoring: Bunker Hill (12.3 points per game) was the only team in the league to score fewer than 20 points per game… half of the conference – Lincolnton (47.8), Maiden (43.6), East Lincoln (37.7) and West Caldwell (33.7) — scored 30 or more per game.

Like always: Maiden led the conference in rushing and was the only team with 300 or more yards per game… next closest, West Lincoln, averaged nearly 56 fewer yards per game than the Blue Devils.

Airing it out: The conference’s top four passing teams – Lincolnton, Maiden, East Lincoln and West Caldwell – threw for a combined 9,791 yards and 109 TDs… the average yardage gained per catch stretched from a low of 10.2 (Newton-Conover) to a high of 20.2 (East Lincoln).

Moving dat ball: Five of the league’s eight teams gained at least 315 yards of offense per game, led by Lincolnton’s 475.0… the three that did not – West Lincoln, Bandys, Bunker Hill.

How many did you say?: Lincolnton was easily the highest-scoring team in the conference, producing 104 offensive TDs, including 50 passing.

‘D’ wins championships: Leading the league in total defense (250.6 yards per game allowed), West Caldwell shared the conference title with Lincolnton…the toughest team to run against was East Lincoln… the best passing defense, at least statistically, belonged to Lincolnton as the Wolves were the only team in the conference to give up fewer than 100 passing yards per game… toughest secondary, allowing only seven TDs, was West Caldwell.

That much, huh?: Surprisingly, every SD-7 2A defense last season allowed at least 4.4 yards per play… most per pay was Bunker Hill at 8.2.

Not our end zone!: West Caldwell’s defense allowed the fewest rushing TDs, the fewest passing TDs (7), the fewest total TDs, seven fewer than the No. 2 in that stat, East Lincoln.

I’ll take that: West Caldwell’s 10-win season was fueled, in part, by an offense that had only eight turnovers. That, coupled with forcing 24 turnovers, gave the Warriors a league-best plus-16 ratio… Bandys had a league-high 26 turnovers and Lincolnton forced the most (32).
