STATESVILLE – Quarterback Bryant Young threw for more than 260 yards and a touchdown to lead Statesville High past visiting West Iredell 37-10 on Friday night in Greyhound Hollow.
Young’s throwing score came with about nine minutes to play in the third quarter and extended Statesville’s lead to 30-3.
The Greyhounds had built a lead with two rushing TDs and a field goal. They led 37-3 after adding a defensive score, and the Warriors rushed for their only TD in the final quarter.
Statesville (3-1) rebounded from a loss last week at Northern Guilford to add a victory. The Greyhounds’ other wins this season are 27-26 at Hickory in overtime and 23-21 over Lake Norman.
West Iredell (1-3), playing its 26th game with Monte Simmons as head coach, has lost three straight games after opening the season with a win over the Hickory Hawks.
The Warriors have one more non-conference game left – next Friday at home against North Iredell – before their Northwestern Foothills 2A debut. That comes Sept. 22 with a visit by Draughn.
