NEWTON – Newton-Conover High quarterback Shamar Baker continues to shake, bake and be too hot to handle for opposing defenses.

Baker accounted for five touchdowns on Friday night – four passing and one rushing – as the Red Devils dominated visiting West Lincoln in a 58-8 victory in South Fork 2A football.

Newton-Conover (6-1, 3-0) had its second-highest scoring game in head coach Matt Beam’s four seasons and led 36-0 at the half en route to a win that keeps it tied with East Lincoln and Maiden for first place.

Baker, who the week before ran for three TDs and passed for two in a 55-7 road win over Bandys, started the scoring on Friday night with a 34-yard TD pass to Kyjuan McClain less than two minutes after kickoff.

Two minutes later, Baker found Myles Baker on a 56-yard TD pass and McClain again, about six minutes later, to stretch the Red Devils’ lead to 21-0.

After running back Tylor Stinson (12 carries for 125 yards) scored on a 5-yard run, Baker hit Jaheim Mullen on a 12-yard throw to push Newton-Conover ahead 36-0.

Shamar Baker’s TD run of 16 yards came with about eight minutes to play in the third quarter, and the Red Devils had scored 57 unanswered points before the Rebels (3-4, 1-2) got their only score in with about seven minutes to play on a 13-yard run by Brendan Ikard.

Shamar Baker completed eight of 12 passes for 197 yards and added 39 rushing yards. He hit Myles Baker on three passes for 97 yards and McClain caught three for 80 yards.

Nakathon Phansook led West Lincoln with 98 yards rushing on 22 carries.

The Red Devils had 10 possessions and scored on eight of them.

Newton-Conover is on the road for its next game, on Friday night with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Lake Norman Charter.

The Rebels, 2-21 against the Red Devils with only one win at Gurley Stadium during the stretch, are at home next Friday. Kickoff for a league game with Lincolnton is at 7:30 p.m.
