ICARD – Running back Tylor Stinson scored two of Newton-Conover High’s first three touchdowns on Friday night, sparking the Red Devils as they stayed unbeaten with a 44-6 victory over East Burke on the road.

Stinson scored on a 31-yard run in the opening 30 seconds of a non-league game, and his TD run with 2:47 to go in the opening quarter had the Red Devils ahead 21-6.

East Burke (0-4) was within 8-6 after Grant Fulbright broke a run for 53 yards and a TD, but the Red Devils (3-0) answered that with a 16-yard scoring run by quarterback Shamar Baker about four minutes later.

Playing the Cavs for the first time since 2012 and battling them in Icard for the first time since losing a one-point double overtime game, the Red Devils won for the fifth time in the last six games in the series.

The victory pushed Newton-Conover to 22-15-1 under head coach Matt Beam, who also gained his 103rd career win.

The Red Devils now prepare for a big test, closing their non-conference schedule on Friday night (7:30 p.m.) with a trip to Hibriten, also unbeaten after hammering South Caldwell on Friday night.

Newton-Conover and Hibriten have not played since 2008 when the Panthers snapped the Red Devils’ six-game win streak in the series by prevailing 26-21 in Lenoir.

After playing the Panthers, the Red Devils start South Fork 2A play on Sept. 22 with a home game against Lincolnton.

East Burke, still seeking a first win for head coach Mark Buffamoyer, will try to gain that on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when West Lincoln visits Icard. The Cavs’ first Northwestern Foothills 2A game, on Sept. 29, will be against West Iredell in Icard.
