ICARD – A 75-yard scoring run on a keeper gave Bunker Hill High some breathing room on Friday night, and the visiting Bears went on to beat East Burke 44-26 to snap a 10-game football losing streak.

The Bears (1-8, 1-3 Northwestern Foothills 2A) handed head coach David Haynie his second win in 20 games at Bunker Hill after quarterback Aaron Prince provide a 30-20 lead with his TD on a keeper.

Bunker Hill had last won over Bandys 26-6 at Bunker Hill in its ninth game of last season. The Bears’ losing streak began with losses to Newton-Conover and West Caldwell to end last year’s 1-10 season.

Friday night’s game was close until Prince scored that TD, and the Bears won for the third time in five series battles with the Cavs (1-7, 0-3).

Josh Moore, who had two first-half rushing TDs, gave East Burke a 14-10 lead with a TD run and two-point conversion run.

Raheem Carson’s 4-yard TD run sent Bunker Hill to the locker room leading 16-14 at the half.

The Bears threw for a score to lead 23-14 before the Cavs closed within 23-20 when Brett Childers broke a long run to set up a 5-yard rushing score by Seth Pruitt.

The win left Bunker Hill in a fifth-place tie with Draughn, and East Burke is in last place and the only Northwestern Foothills 2A team without a league win.

If Bunker Hill can collect another win over its final two games — which includes at Patton on Oct. 27 since the Bears’ open date is the final night of the regular season – it will have at least two wins in all but six of its 59 varsity football seasons.

Bunker Hill is 4-38 since going 8-5 and to the state playoffs in 2013.

Bunker Hill’s win means none of the 23 schools in the Greater Hickory area’s leagues – the South Fork 2A and the Northwestern 3A-4A are the others – are winless this season.

The Bears have a home game next Friday at 7:30 p.m. against league foe West Iredell while the Cavs are on the road, also at 7:30 p.m., to battle undefeated Hibriten.
