PILOT MOUNTAIN – Trent Lowman’s new gig is in the mountains as head football coach at East Surry High.
Lowman — who resigned as head football coach at Bandys this week — was introduced on campus as the Cardinals’ new head coach on Thursday at about 2 p.m. He will begin work there on Monday.
Lowman replaces David Diamont, who retired after his second tenure (of 19 seasons) as East Surry’s head coach. Diamont’s 37-year record as a head coach, which includes his time at Mount Airy, is 291-153, and the school is naming its football field after him.
East Surry opens the season Aug. 17 at East Wilkes.
Lowman, the starting quarterback at Bandys in 1999 and 2000, guided Bandys to a 23-35 record over five seasons since replacing his dad, Randy, as head coach in 2013. Prior to that, Lowman was an assistant at Bandys, and his coaching career also includes a stint as an assistant coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Bandys went 5-7 last season, returning to the state playoffs after not qualifying in the previous two seasons. The Trojans made the postseason in Lowman’s first two years (2013, 2014) and had their best season under Lowman in 2014 (8-4).
The Cardinals play in the Northwest 1A, where they were 9-5 overall last season and 4-1 in the conference to finish in second place behind Mount Airy (14-1, 5-0).
East Surry won two state 1A playoff games last season – beating Starmount 21-14 and East Wilkes 49-36 – before being eliminated in the third round 49-27 by Murphy.
The Cardinals’ conference opponents are Bishop McGuinness, Mount Airy, North Stokes, South Stokes and Winston-Salem Prep.
East Surry is 52-15 in the five seasons since it last had a losing record of 6-7 in 2012.
