WINSTON-SALEM – Wake Forest High captured its second straight championship with a 21-0 victory over Mallard Creek on Saturday in the state 4AA football final at Wake Forest’s BBB&T Field.

The Cougars’ defense was stifling again this year in the final, holding Mallard Creek (14-1, West No. 1 seed) to just 112 yards of total offense.

Devon Lawrence powered Wake Forest’s rushing attack, gaining 135 yards on 25 carries. He had the game’s final TD, icing a win for the Cougars with a 7-yard run with one minute, 12 seconds to play. He was named the game’s M.V.P.

Wake Forest (15-0, East No. 1 seed) opened the scoring with 5:25 to play when Chris James hit John Jiles for a 20-yard TD pass to make it 7-0 after a PAT. Jiles was named the Cougars’ Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

The Cougars got a quick defensive stop, and then Marquis Dunn broke off a 54-yard run that made it 14-0 with 3:02 to play.

Javon Terry was Wake Forest’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player, picking up an interception and returning it 21 yards. He added two tackles.

Mallard Creek never mustered much offensively. Nasjzae Bryant was the bright spot for the Mavericks, picking up 106 yards on 20 carries. He was named the Mavericks’ Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

Jacob Roberts took home the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award for the Mavericks. He had 10 tackles.
