STATE 2AA FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: Mount Pleasant shuts down E. Lincoln offense, wins handily

MOUNT PLEASANT – Holding a lively East Lincoln High offense to fewer than 100 yards sparked Mount Pleasant’s 35-0 victory over the visiting Mustangs to open the state 2AA football playoffs on Friday night.

The fourth-seeded Tigers (10-2) earned a second round home matchup next Friday against another set of Tigers, as No. 12 Fred T. Foard (9-3) stunned fifth-seeded Maiden 16-0 on Friday in Maiden.

Mount Pleasant forced two turnovers against the 13th seeded Mustangs, who finished 6-6.

The Tigers gained more than 200 yards rushing and got nearly 100 from Garrett Overbay in the victory. Quarterback Chance Daquila completed eight of his 10 passes, two for TDs to Cade McDonald.

Ryan Matz led East Lincoln on defense.

The Mustangs finish without a winning record for the first time since going 2-9 in 2004. The next year, Mike Byus arrived as head coach and they won 143 games and two state titles over the next 12 seasons.

The Tigers go into the Foard game having outscored opponents 438-111 this season behind Overbay, Daquila and receiver Landon Parker.

Overbay has rushed for nearly 1,200 yards, Daquila has thrown for 1,639 and Parker has more than 1,000 receiving yards.
