Two of the out-of-town teams still in contention for state high school football titles are coached by Catawba County natives.
Former Bandys High head coach Trent Lowman, also a former Trojans quarterback, has coached East Surry into the third round in the West 1AA bracket.
Shane Laws is from Newton-Conover and has his A.C. Reynolds Rockets playing in the third round of the West 3AA bracket.
Lowman spent five seasons as head coach at Bandys. His fourth-seeded Cardinals are 9-3 and facing a rematch with rival Mount Airy (12-0, No. 1 seed) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
East Surry had a first-round bye and beat Bessemer City 62-22 on Friday night at East Surry.
If the Cardinals win this Friday, they will play the following Friday night against No. 12 Polk County (5-8) or No. 2 Starmount (6-6) for a spot in the state 1AA final.
If Laws’ Rockets prevail on Friday over No. 3 Mount Tabor (9-4) in Fairview, they’ll reach the West 3AA title game against No. 5 Weddington (12-1) or No. 1 Watauga (13-0).
A.C. Reynolds is a West 3AA No. 2 seed and beat No. 10 Sun Valley 22-14 on Friday night at A.C. Reynolds and No. 15 A.L. Brown, also at A.C. Reynolds, in the first round, 35-28.
