STARMOUNT – The 73rd football game of Trent Lowman’s head-coaching career will be for all the marbles.

Lowman, in his first season at East Surry High after five years as head coach at Bandys, his alma mater, collected a West 1AA championship on Friday night with a 44-27 road victory over Starmount.

The win pushed the Cardinals (11-3) into the state 1AA title game next weekend against East No. 1 seed Tarboro (14-0), which beat No. 3 Edenton Holmes 48-7 on Friday in Tarboro for the East 1AA crown.

The game details, including location and start time, are to be announced by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).

Lowman’s team is a West No. 4 seed that had a first-round bye before beating No. 5 Bessemer City 62-22 in the second round and winning 40-0 at Mount Airy in the third round.

Mount Airy beat East Surry 31-28 with a TD in the closing seconds in a regular-season game. The Cardinals’ other losses this season are 26-19 to West Stokes and 35-21 to Jamestown Ragsdale.

Lowman, a second-generation coach, was head coach at Bandys from 2013 through 2017 after replacing his dad, Randy, when he retired after the 2012 season.

The Trojans went 23-35 under Trent Lowman – 5-7, 8-4, 2-9, 3-8 and 5-7 – and reached the state playoffs three times but did not win a postseason game. His career coaching record is 34-38.
