X-C WEST REGIONALS: N. Lincoln, Watauga, Kell sweep titles

North Lincoln High swept West 2A Regional championships in cross country on Friday at Murray’s Mill.

The meet was moved to Catawba County after McAlpine Park in Charlotte could not play host because of policy changes related to COVID-19 in Charlotte-Meckelnburg Schools.

North Lincoln’s boys finished in front of Franklin, and the Knights’ girls finished ahead of South Fork 2A foe Lake Norman Charter.

Individual race winners were Ethan Stamey of Franklin (16:16.11) and Angie Allen of North Lincoln (18:09.45).

The top three boys’ and girls’ teams advance to the state championships.

Also earning boys’ state spots were Grant Howlett of Lake Norman Charter and Reed Farrar of Draughn.

The regional boys’ field did not include, for undisclosed reason, Northwestern Foothills 2A champion Ben Trimm of Fred T. Foard.

Katherine Hopkins of Lincolnton and Fred T. Foard’s Karina Coulter each earned individual bids into the state championships.

Bandys’ girls were fifth in the team standings and the Bandys boys were sixth.

Watauga sweeps West 3A

Watauga’s girls and boys won team titles in the West 3A Regional in Hendersonville.

The girls finished ahead of Asheville and the boys in front of Asheville Roberson.

Watauga’s Sidra Miller won the girls’ race in 18:48, the Pioneers’ Sophie Beach was third (19:22.35 and three other Watauga runners finished in the top 10.

Nicolas Willer (15:53.73) and Zach Willer (16:00.40), both of Cramer, finished 1-2 in boys with Watauga’s top runners Rien Freeman and Korben Anderson in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Ardrey Kell wins both 4A titles

Ardrey Kell swept the West 4A Regional championships on Friday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, the boys edging Mooresville and the girls finishing ahead of South Mecklenburg.

Kell’s Murphy Smith (15:47.30) was the boys’ champ while Madeline Stolbert of Lake Norman was the girls’ champ (18:35.10).
