EAST-WEST BASKETBALL: Shubert, James play for West team coached by Freedom’s Rogers

GREENSBORO — A high-scoring guard from Lincoln Charter and a leader of last year’s Hickory team head into the annual East-West All-Star boys’ high school basketball game on Monday night at the Greensboro Coliseum.

THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE
Monday: Basketball at Greensboro Coliseum, girls at 6:30 p.m., boys to follow.
Tuesday: Soccer at MacPherson Stadium, girls at 6:30 p.m., boys to follow
Wednesday: Football at Grimsley High’s Jamieson Stadium, 8 p.m.

Kody Shubert, a 5-foot-11 guard from Lincoln Charter, and Torey James, a 6-5 forward from Hickory, are on the West roster for the annual all-seniors all-star battle.

The girls’ all-stars tip at 6:30 p.m. and the boys’ game will follow.

Shubert and James will be playing for head coach Casey Rogers of Freedom.

Both area boys’ basketball player have signed to play in college, James choosing Ohio University http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/mbkb/2018-19/releases/20180516mz7z2x and Shubert committing before last season to play at Presbyterian College.

James averaged 21. 3 points, seven rebounds and five assists last season, helping Hickory go 13-1 in the Northwestern 3A-4A and win a regular season title and finish 27-3 overall after a fourth-round loss at Greensboro Smith.

Shubert finished with 2,487 career points, averaging 18.2 last season along with 3.4 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 2.3 steals last season. The Eagles won a South Piedmont 1A title and finished 26-5 overall, falling to Winston-Salem Prep in the West 1A Regional.

Lake Norman Charter won the state 1A title in Shubert’s junior season, and he averaged 19.1 points over a 69-game prep career.

Rogers guided Freedom to 23-4 record last season, a year ending with a second round 3A loss to Mount Tabor that left him with a 12-year coaching record – all at his alma mater – of 255-83.

The West will play with a nine-player roster after having lost Rechon Black from Cox Mill and then losing his replacement, 6-9 center Jehlon Johnson of Lincoln Charter, over the weekend when the players reported to Greensboro.

There are no girls from the South Fork 2A, Northwestern Foothills 2A or Northwestern 3A-4A on the West roster, but the assistant coach on Monday will be Hickory’s Barbara Helms

Helms’ team at Hickory 13-12 last season, losing in the first round of the state 3A tournament at Rockingham County. She’s 415-93 in 18 years as a prep head coach and 377-56 after 15 seasons at HHS.

CASEY ROGERS BIO, by NCCA: Freedom, West head coach is entering his 13th season as head coach at Freedom High, where he has compiled a career record of 255-81  in 12 seasons and his teams have won four conference regular season titles, five conference tournament titles and made 12 state playoff appearances, including four regional appearances…Five times named Conference Coach of the Year, twice named District 10 Coach of the Year, and named 2014 N.C. BARBARA HELMS BIO, by NCAA: Hickory,West assistant coach is entering her 16th season as the head coach at Hickory, where she is 377-56 in 15 seasons…she has compiled a career record of 415-93 in 18 seasons and her teams have won 10 conference regular season titles, 10 conference tournament titles and made 18 state playoff appearances, including two finishes as state championship runners-up and winning one state championship…she has received conference, regional, and N.C. Associated Press Coach of the Year honors and was named an ACC Legend at Wake Forest…previously served as head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University and East Burke High…born in Greensboro…1980 graduate of Bishop McGuinness, where she was named captain and MVP in volleyball, captain in softball, and where she was named captain and MVP in basketball, scoring 2,000 points, averaging 21 points and 16 rebounds as a senior…1984 graduate of Wake Forest …earned her MA in Athletic Administration from Appalachian State in 1985…says “It is an honor to be chosen to coach in the all-star game.
