HICKORY – Pairings for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic high school basketball tournaments have been redone.

The tournaments (girls and boys) — scheduled Dec. 27-29 at Catawba Valley Community College’s Tarlton Complex — had some seeds revised on Thursday afternoon. Those came after the original pairings were released in the morning.

Tournament officials announced changes and said the brackets will be revised and released again on Friday.

The new girls’ seeds: 1 Bunker Hill; 2 St. Stephens; 3 Hickory; 4 Fred T. Foard; 5 Newton-Conover; 6 S. Caldwell; 7 Alexander Central; 8 Maiden.

The new boys’ seeds: 1 Maiden; 2 Hickory; 3 Newton-Conover; 4 Fred T. Foard; 5 Bunker Hill; 6 St. Stephens; 7 Alexander Central; 8 S. Caldwell.

Under those changes, first round games on Thursday, Dec. 27 would be:

Girls, times TBA

No. 8 Maiden vs. No. 1 Bunker Hill

No. 7 Alexander Central vs. No. 2 St. Stephens

No. 6 S. Caldwell vs. No. 3 Hickory

No. 5 Newton-Conover vs. No. 4 Fred T. Foard

Boys, times TBA

No. 8 S. Caldwell vs. No. 1 Maiden

No. 7 Alexander Central vs. No. 2 Hickory

No. 6 St. Stephens vs. No. 3 Newton-Conover

No. 5 Bunker Hill vs. No. 4 Fred T. Foard

A tournament official sent an email to media on Thursday afternoon about the revisions. The same official, earlier in the day, sent an email to media and coaches about the original pairings.

Those pairings upset some of the head coaches — both in seeds and the format used to seed the teams — and sent tournament officials and the Hickory Metro Sports Commission (HMSC) back to the drawing board.
