South Caldwell High left-hander Daniel Dye pitched a game that left its mark on the Shelby Easter Tournament on Thursday night –a no-hitter – as the Spartans nipped Burns 1-0 to win a title at Shelby High.

Dye, a senior, struck out 13 and walked one, with that runner then erased on a double play in the fifth inning, as South Caldwell (14-2) won its third tournament game.

The Spartans beat Kings Mountain 10-1 in the first round and Shelby 4-0 in a semifinal, then capped it with Dye’s gem to close the tournament having allowed one run and four hits in three games.

Dye threw 89 pitches – 61 for strikes – and he had six swinging strikeouts and seven called strikeouts. He struck out at least one batter in each inning and registered two in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings and three in the third inning.

Dye’s dominant pitching overshadowed a four-hitter by Burns’ Colby Ferguson.

South Caldwell scored an unearned run in the first inning, using an error and two hits batsmen to gain a lead. After that, Ferguson didn’t allow another run and he ended up striking out five.

Dye won tournament MVP, infielder Owen Foxx (four doubles) won Top Hitter and Ferguson won the tournament’s defensive award for the Bulldogs (10-6).

With 14 wins this season, the Spartans have already matched their lowest win total (14-10 in 2013) of the previous 20 seasons. The other 19 teams won at least 16 games, and 13 of those won 20 or more.

South Caldwell returns to Northwestern 3A-4A play on Tuesday, facing Alexander Central in Hudson at 6:30 p.m. in a game that will break a tie for the conference lead.

Clover (S.C.) 8, Watauga 5

The Blue Eagles scored six runs in the sixth inning to win and grab seventh place at the Shelby Easter Tournament.

A 3-for-4 game by J.T. Wolf sparked Clover (6-12-1). He tripled and drove in two runs with Kolby Crepeau adding two hits and two RBIs and William Van Scoyoc providing two hits and driving in a run.

Watauga dropped to 4-9, losing its fourth straight game, and the Pioneers will return to Northwestern 3A-4A play on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at home against West Caldwell.
