His hire as a math teacher at Watauga was approved by the Watauga County School Board, and coaching assignments are up to each individual school.

Freeman comes on board after the resignations of last year’s head coach, Davie Lee, and then Chris Moore, who took the job in August before deciding to accept an assistant coaching job at UNC-Wilmington.

Watauga finished 5-9 and tied St. Stephens for fifth place last season in the Northwestern 3A-4A, going 8-15 overall after losing its last four games, six of its last seven and eight of its last 10.

A 13-6 loss at Hibriten in the first round of the conference tournament ended Watauga’s season.

Lee guided the Pioneers to a 14-33 record in his two seasons.

Cherryville won conference titles every season that Freeman was on the staff, starting in 2014, and the Ironmen were state 1A champions in 2016.

Freeman has also worked as an assistant coach in Junior American Legion baseball for Cherryville for two seasons (2014, 2015) and he was head baseball coach in 2013 at John Chavis Middle School.

A graduate of Davidson who played four seasons of NCAA Division I baseball there, Freeman was a catcher and outfielder for the Wildcats. He graduated from Davidson in 2012 with a degree in math with a concentration in computer science.

Freeman has a master’s degree from Charlotte in secondary math.
