LENOIR – West Caldwell High’s Cy Smith, who had an ERA last season of 1.31 despite not winning a game, has signed to play college baseball at Appalachian State.

Smith was a key player for the Warriors last season as a junior when they went 3-20 overall and 2-12 in the South Fork 2A.

He hit .344 with three doubles and five home runs and drove in 12 runs.

On the mound, Smith went 0-5 with a save in eight appearances. He pitched 26 2/3 innings, striking out 42, and opponents hit only .144 against him.

Smith had nine strikeouts and eight strikeouts in games against McDowell and seven against Hickory.

The Warriors beat Hibriten in their second game last season (10-2), Freedom in their 10th game of the year (9-8 in eight innings) and then ended an 11-game losing streak by beating Hickory 5-4 in Lenoir.
