UPDATE: Deal has picked up 2 saves for Braves in minors

BRADENTON, Fla. – After seven games in the minor leagues, Hayden Deal owns two saves and an ERA of 2.38.

Deal, a former pitcher at Bandys High and Presbyterian who signed with the Atlanta Braves on June 25, is wearing No. 39 for the GCL Braves.

Through Tuesday night, he was 1-1 with two saves and had pitched 11 1/3 innings, given up 13 hits and seven runs (three earned), walked four and struck out nine.

He gained his first pro victory on July 5 in a 5-2 victory over the GCL Blue Jays by throwing two innings in relief and giving up one hit, walking one and striking out three.

Deal’s first save came July 19 in a 3-2 win over the GCL Phillies, after he threw two innings and allowed one hit while facing eight batters.

Deal’s second save came July 27 when the Braves beat the GCL Pirates 8-6. Deal faced five batters, pitching an inning. He gave up two hits and struck out one.

The Braves are 17-14 and in first place in the GCL’s Northeast Division.

Deal signed with Atlanta in an on-the-spot workout with a Braves scout at the Bandys High field. He threw about 10 pitches and, after the scout made a phone call, was offered a minor league contract.
