DEAL
Hayden Deal had a tough start on Thursday night for the Mississippi Braves.
Deal, a former left-hander at Bandys High, went 5 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits, six runs (all earned) with two walks and three strikeouts in a Double-A game at Montgomery (Ala.).
Deal left with Mississippi ahead by three runs but Montgomery rallied for an 8-all tie to force extra innings.
The Braves scored six runs in the top of the 10th and then gave up four runs in the bottom of the inning, with Mississippi winning 14-12.
The next game in the series is Friday night in Montgomery.
The tough night for Deal left him 1-2 with an ERA of 3.83, and he gave up three home runs.
A crowd of 3,125 watched Deal’s 10th start of the season. He has now pitched 47 innings with 40 strikeouts.
Deal threw strikes on 52 of his 79 pitches, facing 24 batters. He was pitching in his 74th pro game.
The Braves (31-20) are in first place in the Double-A South’s South Division standings, one game up on Pensacola (Fla.).
Deal was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Braves after a tryout at the Bandys stadium. A Braves scout offered Deal a contract before Deal left Bandys that day.
When Deal will make his 11th start of the season will depend on the number of starters the Braves decide to use in their rotation.
After finishing the series at Montgomery, the Braves are at home for a six-game series against Pensacola (Fla.). Deal should pitch in that series.
