Hayden Deal reached a personal milestone — clearing 300 strikeouts as a pro — as visiting Mississippi edged Chattanooga (Tenn.) 3-2 on Thursday night with two runs in the ninth inning to win.
The Braves won a Southern League Double-A game after Deal pitched two innings of relief, the sixth and seventh, before a crowd 5,7652.
He notched his 300 and 301st strikeouts as part of the night, reaching the mark after 337 2/3 career innings and 96 pro appearances (2.99 career ERA).
Deal, a left-handed star at Bandys High and then in college at Presbyterian (S.C.), is 1-0 this season with an ERA of 0.87 in nine games (20 2/3 innings, 21 strikeouts).
The Braves are 13-17 and continue the series on Friday night (6:05 p.m.) in Chattanooga.
In Thursday’s game, Deal threw strikes on 15 of hi 14 pitches. he faced six batters.
