GIRLS SOCCER MATCH

GREENSBORO – Newton-Conover High’s head coach will direct the West All-Stars on Tuesday night in the annual East-West girls’ match at the Bryan Soccer Complex.

Angelo Palozzi, who in six seasons has 100 wins, three league titles and six state playoff teams for the Red Devils, is the West head coach.

His 16-player team features two players from Greater Hickory area schools — Madelyn Becker of Newton-Conover and Hickory’s Jovanna Rameriz Sanchez – and three other players from the nearby North Piedmont 3A-4A, Skyler Chillson of Lake Norman and South Iredell teammates Meaghan Quinn and Brooke Freeman.

All East-West players were seniors in 2017.

The girls’ match is Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at Macpherson Stadium and it is part of the North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA) East-West Clinic Week.

Players reported to Greensboro on Sunday and the teams were to have an afternoon practice and morning and afternoon practices are scheduled Monday at Greensboro Smith High.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with advance packages available in advance by calling the NCCA at (336) 379-9095.

HEAD COACH

ANGELO PALOZZI, NEWTON-CONOVER

West head coach is entering his seventh season at Newton-Conover, where he has compiled a career record of 100-22-8… His teams have won three conference titles and made six state playoff appearances… has also coached the Red Devils’ boys, compiling a career record of 188-74-11 in 12 seasons and winning five conference titles and two state championships…Named conference Coach of the Year four times… Boys’ coaching honors include: Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Coach of the Year, Regional Coach of the Year, North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA) Small School Coach of the Year; North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association (NCSCA) 2A Coach of the Year… served as the head coach in the 2015 Clash of the Carolinas All-Star Game and was head coach in Powerade State Games in 2013, 2014 … previously served as junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant coach at Pittsford (N.Y.) Mendon High…2000 graduate of Gannon University.

Coached by Angelo Palozzi… as senior, named all-state, all region… as junior, named all-state, all-region, Defensive Player of the Year in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A… 15 goals, 16 assists as a junior…as sophomore, named all-region, all0-conference with 11 goals, 10 assists…also all-conference twice in cross country… signed an athletic grant-in-aid with Coker College.

JOVANNA RAMERIZ SANCHEZ, HICKORY

Coached by Brian Jillings… All-State as a senior… signed an athletic grant-in-aid with Catawba.

Quote: “Playing in the all-star game is a great accomplishment, and I am very excited to be attending. I believe that I will get the chance to make new friends and learn new techniques as a player. It will be a great experience.”

 

SKYLER CHILLSON, LAKE NORMAN

Coached by Matthew Bice… All-State as a senior… as junior, named Best Offensive Player and all-region… signed an athletic grant-in-aid with UNC Asheville, where she will major in sociology…wants to pursue a career in sociology/criminal justice.

Quote: “I am extremely excited and honored to be part of this. I am expecting to gain a new knowledge of the game from a different perspective, new friends, and a new life experience in general.”

BROOKE FREEMAN, SOUTH IREDELL

Coached by David Basinger… senior honors: all-state, all-region, All-North Piedmont 3A-4A,conference player of the year, all-county, team co-captain, school’s Female Athlete of the Year…as junior, named all-state, all-region, all-conference, team… selected for the Powerade State Games…signed athletic grant-in-aid with Catawba, where she will major in biology…wants to pursue a career as a PA…

MEAGHAN QUINN, SOUTH IREDELL

Coached by David Basinger… as senior, named all-state, team co-captain… as junior, named all-state, all-region, All-North Piedmont 3A-4A… all-region and all-conference as a sophomore… plans to attend North Carolina, where she will major in biomedical engineering…wants to pursue a career in the biomedical field.”

“I have been playing soccer since I was four years old, so it makes me sad knowing I am going to have to give it up in college.
