OTHER AREA PLAYERS

HAYDEN DEAL (Class A Rome, Ga.)

Rome’s home game on Thursday night against Charleston (S.C.) was rained out and will be played on Friday as part of a doubleheader that begins at 5 p.m.

Hayden Deal, a star at Bandys High who played college baseball at Presbyterian, was not scheduled to pitch on Thursday.

In his last outing — on Tuesday night at Augusta (Ga.) in a 5-1 victory — he threw a complete game and earned a victory.

Deal, a left-hander, pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, one run (earned), walking none and striking out five.

Making his first appearance since June 8, Deal threw 74 pitches (51 for strikes), faced 24 batters and got 10 ground ball outs.

Deal is 5-1 with an ERA of 1.89, pitching 57 innings this season. He’s hit four batters, intentionally walked one and walked nine to go with 60 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .197 against him this season.

In his last 10 outings, he is 2-1 with an ERA of 1.86, pitching 38 2/3 innings with five walks and 32 strikeouts.

The Braves are 50-45 overall and 10-16 in the second-half SAL Southern Division standings. They won a first-half title, securing a postseason berth.

ZACH JARRETT (Class A Delmarva, Md.)

Zach Jarrett — who starred in high school at Hickory and in college at Charlotte – went 0-for-4 on Thursday night as visiting Greensboro nipped Delmarva 1-0 before 2,884.

He started in left field – batting third in the lineup — and his batting average dropped from .300 to .296.

In 90 games this season, Jarrett also has 19 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 52 RBIs. He’s hitting .195 with three home runs and five RBIs in his last 10 games.

Delmarva dropped to 51-43 and 16-11 in the second half in the SAL Northern Division standings. The Shorebirds are in second place in the second-half standings, 1 ½ games back of Lakewood, N.J., and a half-game in front of third-place Hickory.

HUNTER HARVEY (Class AA Bowie, Md.)

Former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey remains in Florida as he recovers from a shoulder injury sustained while trying to maneuver away from a foul ball into the dugout on a day he was not pitching.

When he twisted to avoid being struck by the ball, his right shoulder popped out of socket.

Harvey is now throwing some and is expected to pitch in a game in Florida on Aug. 4.

He was scratched from his 10th start (June 8) and remains listed as “active” on the Bowie roster. He is on the Baltimore Orioles’ 40-man roster, so if he were to go on the 60-day disabled list he would be considered on the major league roster during that time.

Harvey is 1-2 with 32 1/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 36 hits, 20 runs (all earned), walked eight and struck out 30. His ERA is 5.57.

Bowie finished last in the first-half West Division of the Eastern League, 8 ½ games back of division winner Akron (Ohio).

Erie (Pa.) beat Bowie 7-3 at Bowie on Thursday night before 2,382, dropping the Baysox at 43-52 overall in the Eastern League.
